Microphone delay when recording in Windows 7

Since upgrading from Vista to Win7, my microphone input has a delay of 500ms to 1s when recording.  This is most notable in apps like Ventrilo.  Anyone else having this problem?

Hi Everyone,

Please see my earlier replies. No functionality has been removed in Windows 7. If you have an audio driver and codec that exposes the hardware loopback, it will still be present on the Levels tab of the Speakers device. However, not all drivers expose this. If you had this option on XP and load the same audio driver, it should be exposed on Windows 7. Same with the stereo mixer. If the audio driver exposes it, it will be available. It is hidden by default on Vista/Windows 7. But on the Recording tab if you right click in the open area and select show disabled devices, you can enable it. If a Stereo Mix device is not shown, then the audio driver is not exposing one. If you had this option on XP, then please try installing the same driver version that was previously installed.

    i read on a crappy laptop forum that someone had success installing older vista drivers. I have had no luck tho as I own a Sony and they dont have great driver siupport.

    I had everything working fine with an old C-Media sound card, just because W7 can't even smell it if you don't install the C-Media drivers, unlike the Realtek, that was already installed and working (the wrong way) at first boot. So I thought, what if I get rid of W7 sound manager and try to configure everything from, and only from, the Realtek manager, just as the C-Media sound card does with its own Xear3D? Voilà, line in and mic are now working fine and I can hear it with no lag at all.

    So my first advice is don't try to configure anything from the W7 audio manager and use only the own sound card manager. Don't even think to select the box "listen to this device". Run away as fast as you can from the W7 audio manager, because it will ____ up everything. The integrated card in my pc is the Realtek, but I suppose this might work also for any other sound card with it's own audio manager.

    But there's still the problem if you try to connect a USB microphone, because the sound card can't find it unless you select the infamous "listen to this device" box, so welcome back lag. That's why I don't propose this message as an answer, because the problem still exists.

    Same problem here. This is just insane. My computer was my recording studio and now I've hit a brick wall. Most everything else seems to work smoothly in W7, but this is something that's just too blatant to have let slip by. How? Did they not think it would matter? Did they not test it at all, not once? Please, Microsoft, get working on this. I want to like Windows 7, I really do.

    Well so far no good for me either.  Yup...just invested over $2K in a computer with all the trimmings.  Win 7.  You sure look pretty.  But I can't even record a video in Camtasia and hear my voice without a huge delay of nearly 1/2 second.
