Microphone delay when recording in Windows 7

Since upgrading from Vista to Win7, my microphone input has a delay of 500ms to 1s when recording.  This is most notable in apps like Ventrilo.  Anyone else having this problem?

Hi Everyone,

Please see my earlier replies. No functionality has been removed in Windows 7. If you have an audio driver and codec that exposes the hardware loopback, it will still be present on the Levels tab of the Speakers device. However, not all drivers expose this. If you had this option on XP and load the same audio driver, it should be exposed on Windows 7. Same with the stereo mixer. If the audio driver exposes it, it will be available. It is hidden by default on Vista/Windows 7. But on the Recording tab if you right click in the open area and select show disabled devices, you can enable it. If a Stereo Mix device is not shown, then the audio driver is not exposing one. If you had this option on XP, then please try installing the same driver version that was previously installed.

    Yea, I noticed you proposed the answer.  I was reluctant to even try those suggestions since it included removing entries related to display adapter.  I was afraid removing those entries may make the display disappear then I will be 'flying' blind in addition to the mic delay.  Why remove display adapter entries for a problem related to audio?  In any case, his suggestions do sound generic and gives the impression that he may not yet know what actually caused the sound delay.  One needs to know the cause of a problem in order to fix it.

    Reporting exactly the same error. Bought a whole new top-of-the line system, plugged my guitar in through the line-in port and was horrified. Words cannot express how angry I am with Microsoft for continuously making mistake after mistake with simple stuff like this. Really, I should have gotten a Mac. My other musician friends have them, they never complain about stuff like this. Remember the Vista "feature" that prevented the use of the line-in port until you ran a registry hack? How can there be so many complaints in this thread, and no answer from Microsoft? I needed my recording rig to work so I can meet a deadline. Microsoft, you are made of pure fail.

    Absolutely the anger I felt. I'm so far satisfied with Windows 7 Home Premium (64bit), but the playback delay is a total disaster for me.

    We're not the only group of people complaining here, there are countless other musicians out there complaining about the problem on other forums.

    I would like to urge Microsoft to get this problem fixed immediately. No point for us to "upgrade" back to Windows XP; most of our systems are built specially to optimise with Win7.

    "Microsoft ANSWERS" as it says -- Microsoft, we need your answer now.

    Looks I'm going to have to go with the "XP" solution - no official response on this thread since October - what kind of a shoddy business is Microsoft running anyway? I tried getting the latest hardware drivers, and installing ASIO4All just to be safe, but the problem is still there. Also disabled all enhancements, and bumped all hardware sampling quality down to standard CD (16bit, 44.1 khz). Still lags.

    Here's the kicker though : I can roll back to XP, a whole TWO versions of Windows ago, and not lose out on a single feature I really want. Either XP was that good, or Vista and 7 are that useless. While I liked the eye-candy and UI improvements in 7, none of that can out-weigh this ridiculous latency. Seriously Microsoft, go out of business already, because it's been years since you guys contributed anything of real value to our lives.

    Edit : oh, you have to love the audio "troubleshooter" guide. It checks if I've plugged my mic in. After that, it's totally stumped. Why do they even bother?

    "I'm a PC, but I'd rather not be, because all I can run is this ____ software by Microsoft".
