Microphone delay when recording in Windows 7

Since upgrading from Vista to Win7, my microphone input has a delay of 500ms to 1s when recording.  This is most notable in apps like Ventrilo.  Anyone else having this problem?

Hi Everyone,

Please see my earlier replies. No functionality has been removed in Windows 7. If you have an audio driver and codec that exposes the hardware loopback, it will still be present on the Levels tab of the Speakers device. However, not all drivers expose this. If you had this option on XP and load the same audio driver, it should be exposed on Windows 7. Same with the stereo mixer. If the audio driver exposes it, it will be available. It is hidden by default on Vista/Windows 7. But on the Recording tab if you right click in the open area and select show disabled devices, you can enable it. If a Stereo Mix device is not shown, then the audio driver is not exposing one. If you had this option on XP, then please try installing the same driver version that was previously installed.

    Absolutely the anger I felt. I'm so far satisfied with Windows 7 Home Premium (64bit), but the playback delay is a total disaster for me.

    We're not the only group of people complaining here, there are countless other musicians out there complaining about the problem on other forums.

    I would like to urge Microsoft to get this problem fixed immediately. No point for us to "upgrade" back to Windows XP; most of our systems are built specially to optimise with Win7.

    "Microsoft ANSWERS" as it says -- Microsoft, we need your answer now.

    Reporting exactly the same error. Bought a whole new top-of-the line system, plugged my guitar in through the line-in port and was horrified. Words cannot express how angry I am with Microsoft for continuously making mistake after mistake with simple stuff like this. Really, I should have gotten a Mac. My other musician friends have them, they never complain about stuff like this. Remember the Vista "feature" that prevented the use of the line-in port until you ran a registry hack? How can there be so many complaints in this thread, and no answer from Microsoft? I needed my recording rig to work so I can meet a deadline. Microsoft, you are made of pure fail.

    Yea, I noticed you proposed the answer.  I was reluctant to even try those suggestions since it included removing entries related to display adapter.  I was afraid removing those entries may make the display disappear then I will be 'flying' blind in addition to the mic delay.  Why remove display adapter entries for a problem related to audio?  In any case, his suggestions do sound generic and gives the impression that he may not yet know what actually caused the sound delay.  One needs to know the cause of a problem in order to fix it.

    Got 2 (!) units of Lenovo Q110 running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit to go with my HD TVs (HDMI) for some family leisure use (karaoke).  Was happily connecting it up with brand new microphones.  Then discovered that the mic output has a delay and was totally weird when trying to do some karaoke.  These two one-month-old units are taking pride of place prominently at home but now seldom used because of that.

    Like others here and elsewhere, it is incomprehensible to find that a solution is non-existent.  I have been a computer user for over 20 years and had seen Microsoft evolve from DOS 2.1 until today, done a fair bit of programming work involving DOS and Windows (remember the good old dBase, Foxbase, Borland C, then the C-programming on SCO-Unix on Intel box, Microsoft C++ developing interfaces including DLL routines, winsock for equipment interfaces etc.) but never expected that a brand new system with a brand new OS not work out of the box.

    Come on, Microsoft.  Do what is important to you - find out what is wrong with your software and give us the corrected bit. I have 3 MAC laptops and I won't bore you with the comparisons between OSX and Windows.  I am planning to replace all my old Windows XP desktops with MAC, but it is not related to this.  It is just that with the mockery of Vista (unfortunately I have a Fujitsu laptop running that which incidentally is the cause of my getting the 3 MAC laptops), I was filled with confidence that Windows 7 should be an improvement over XP with none of the nonsense we find in Vista.

    Please help.
