Microphone delay when recording in Windows 7

Get your Windows XP SP3 back!!!!

I don't think Microsoft will fix this in Windows 7.

I have had this problem for a while and have been through many blogs with no apparent or clear answer.  I had no problem in XP and then went to a new 1747 Dell Studio with W7-64 bit, an IDT Audio codec, Creative SOundblaste X-Fi, and an ATI Mobile Radeon 4650.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled all the latest drivers and tried every trick listed above and in other blogs, including the standard issue Microsoft "Use your troubleshooter and Windows update program ". Bogus.  This is obviously is a bad WIndows 7 issue and as a fellow musician who used the line in ports all the time previously with no issue, this latency issue is horrible.  One thing that is odd that I would appreciate any feedback on as well is that the ATI Mobile Radeon apparently installs a high tech audio device with drivers in addition to the IDT high definition codec device.  I removed the IDT audio device just to see what would happen but to no avail.  I still get bad distortion and the 500 ms or so latency that as a drummer is maddening.  Any help that someone could give rather than the above suggestions like turn the "lister to this device" off would certainly be appreciated.  My recording is at a standstill.

If someone else tells me they've  FOUND THE ANSWER and tells me to UNTICK the listen to box and UNMUTE the speakers' level tab LINE IN...

Please tell me where in the accompanying picture I can find the speakers' level line in settings? Or the controls in the Realtek Audio Manager.

Now if someone could please tell me if it would be possible (and how) to expose that parameter on the Realtek ALC268 in built in to my laptops mainboard, I'd be in business. I've been looking around the registry along the lines ofthis article but can't find anything resembling those commands. Please enlighten me!

I do have an M-Audio firewire audiophile that I have set up for direct output to monitor in real-time, But I would love to be able to just take my laptop, 'phones and guitar and practice without having to drag that firewire box and power supply around with me.

Pretty simply, when you have a Realtek HD ALC268 there is no mic slider on the speakers properties levels tab. Neither are those parameters available on the HD Audio Manager software. So, there's no way to monitor except with the listen to tick box and extreme latency.

If anyone knows how to expose that mic slider in the speakers tab I'm all ears.
