Windows 7 random restarts

I was getting random restarts  - about 2 a day.  It was happening at any time whether the comp was 'in use' or not.

No power saving/sleep/hibernate options are ticked.

I followed the advice given by mods for previous posts ie:

'If the above steps fail, I would suggest you to try disabling Automatic restart the following steps. To disable Automatic restart, follow the steps below: 1. Click on Start 2. Right click on Computer 3. Click on Change Settings 4. Click on Advanced 5. Click on Settings 6. Uncheck Automatically Restart 7. Click on OK and restart the computer.'

And hey presto no more random restarts, or more importantly - no errors were reported in event viewer.

Is the automatic restart utility in Win 7 a bit too sensitive?

Yes would not hurt to check with it on again. Also run those utilities now just to see

if anything is shown. BTW remember if you run DiskCleanUp and many cleanup

utilities the Error and minidump files can be deleted - some of those cleanup programs

can be set to run at startup or automatically which means even if there are errors

to be reviewed they get deleted before you see them.

Remember even though the temps you can read seem ok the heat sensors can be

set too slow or miss-fire. Added the video card or other device can cause reboots

from over-heating. Without careful observation heat related issues can be difficult

to detect and fix. Added this does not mean there is a heat issue, just something to

keep eyes on.

I've just encountered this random restart non-sense and changed out 2 video cards with the same problem still prevailing after 2 reinstalls. Just an extra piece of advice, if your installing a fresh 64bit copy of Win7 then remove ALL your extra PCI, PCI-E (sound and video, etc) cards before starting the install. This will force all the on-board chips to be properly installed. Then you can progressively add your video/sound, etc cards back in progressively.

    TL;DR version

    1. Remove sound and video cards.
    2. Install Win 7 using only the on-board (where applicable, not all boards have video built-in).
    3. Add you video and sound back in one at a time after installing all on-board hardware and Windows updates.

    Hi.

I'm not an expert but I think I fixed this problem. I haven't had a reboot for the past 3 days. All I did was taken out all the unnecessary services, luck or magic, it worked out.
