The inability to easily perform complete backups/disc imaging for Windows products is a critical issue, and represents what could be construed to be a significant service failure on the part of Microsoft. Average users should be able to perform successful
backups. It should be easy. Period.
This is the second system (Win 7 64 bit) that has given me fits in attempts to create backups using standard Windows apps. I have a Vista system for which I have never created a successful backup. I have a BS in IT. I really feel for the average user
faced with warnings to backup their systems. Error language returned is cryptic at best for such users. One must wonder if such behavior is aimed to drive marketing; the user must resort to paying for services.
Regarding backup failure:
Error code: 0x81000037
Windows Backup failed while trying to read from the shadow copy on one of the volumes being backed up. Please check in the event logs for any relevant errors.
No meaningful information was found in event logs.
For workaround Issue 1 and Issue 2 under your first link:
Some paths returned by "DIR /AL /S" could not be found in Explorer. There are no instructions that address that. The instructions do not indicate what tool to use to find the specified junctions/reparse points. The instructions are not explicit with
respect to other results returned for "Type" in the General tab of the Properties window. I assumed that if Type returned "Mounted Volume" the folder should be deleted, and any other value returned means no action should be taken.
The instructions did not indicate whether running "DIR /AL /S" from the user directory was sufficient, or if the command should be run from the root, as running such from the root directory returned many more reparse points.
I am pasting the output from user directory command below. I have added Type returned under General tab of Properties in parenthesis at the end of the lines. As you can see there are no "Mounted Volume" types returned. I am still unable to successfully
perform a complete backup.
Volume in drive C is Windows7_OS
Volume Serial Number is A444-CBE7
