windows 7: Can't get HDMI audio - the hdmi device does not appear under the playback devices

so yeah you've probably gathered my problem from my title.

i have an integrated intel graphics chip (interestingly enough the intel control pane,l through which i used to control the majority of the devices functions, did not survive the upgrade... it is nowhere to be found)

so i've updated the drivers, and checked the playback devices, and my hdmi cables are plugged in

i get video but no audio, and am not sure i am just missing something simple.

eitherway i've done a lot of searching and have yet to find an answer any help would be much appreciated!

Hello spedlifeshow,

The issue here can be one of several issues, the following may apply:

The HDMI graphics card may support HDMI Video, but may not support HDMI Audio
You may need to set the HDMI audio device as the default sound device
You may need to update your HDMI video card drivers for your version of Windows
If your HDMI video card does not support audio, you may need to connect additional audio cables between the PC and TV

it could be nothing but worth a try if your on windows 7. start menu, type-change sound card settings, right click the box showing available outputs and make sure you show disabled devices. could be something as simple as that.....

I had the same problem, no HDMI Audio option available in the Sounds section until I started enabling some of the services and start up executables that I had previously disabled on my laptop. I did go to realtek's website and install their HD audio driver but I don't think that helped.

Here's a list of things that I enabled. I don't know which one magically allowed my PC to detect my Panasonic HDTV and install it's drivers:

Intel Proset Wireless Event Log

NVIDIA Driver Helper Service

NVIDIA Update Service Daemon

Intel(R) Proset/Wireless Registry Service

NVIDIA Stereoscopic 3D Driver Service

Intel(R) Common User Interface (all 3)

NVIDIDA Hotkey Service

I have a Dell XPS 17L701x

I had the same issues with my HP Pavilion DV4 laptop after the upgrade. Ran the Intel upgrade utility for the internal Intel chipset and viola, it works. http://www.intel.com/p/en\_US/support/detect

Bought an entirely new system to use as a media centre:

Intel DH67BL Media Series motherboard

Intel i5

4G ram

Windows 7 Home Premium

HDMI connection to Toshiba Cinema Series television

Funny thing, the Windows start sound would play but then the HDMI audio would cut out. Installed the latest audio and video drivers from Intel but audio wouldn't work. I uninstalled the RealTek audio drivers and then reinstalled the audio and video drivers. The left/right channel test started working and sound came back.

Thought that did the trick but every few minutes it cuts out. I have to go into the control panel, configure the sound settings and switch from DVD quality to CD quality (or the reverse) and the sound comes back. Very frustrating and annoying.

So it works (sort of) until it stops and then I have to kickstart it by changing the audio quality.
