windows 7: Can't get HDMI audio - the hdmi device does not appear under the playback devices

so yeah you've probably gathered my problem from my title.

i have an integrated intel graphics chip (interestingly enough the intel control pane,l through which i used to control the majority of the devices functions, did not survive the upgrade... it is nowhere to be found)

so i've updated the drivers, and checked the playback devices, and my hdmi cables are plugged in

i get video but no audio, and am not sure i am just missing something simple.

eitherway i've done a lot of searching and have yet to find an answer any help would be much appreciated!

Hello spedlifeshow,

The issue here can be one of several issues, the following may apply:

  • The HDMI graphics card may support HDMI Video, but may not support HDMI Audio
  • You may need to set the HDMI audio device as the default sound device
  • You may need to update your HDMI video card drivers for your version of Windows
  • If your HDMI video card does not support audio, you may need to connect additional audio cables between the PC and TV

For the steps for some of these issues see the following No sound tutorial (look on the Check your Hardware tab under HDMI cables).

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/help/no-sound-in-windows

Hope this helps

LD.

PROBLEM SOLVED!  Cver 1968's solution solved my issue where HDMI was not transmitting audio to my HD tv.  I have Vista on a Dell Laptop M1530, and by changing the settings in the Media Player, I was able to receive audio.

I hope this helps someone.  I got this thread on a google search when I had a windows 7 laptop not outputting sound.

-right click on the speaker icon on the system tray

    -select 'playback devices'

-right click on 'digital output device (hdmi out)'

    -select 'set as default device'

IF 'Digital output device (hdmi out)' is not showing up

while you are in the playback devices (sound) screen

-right click on an empty space and check 'Show disabled devices' and 'show disconnected devices'

sometimes you may have to restart your media software application after this

    hope that helps
