windows 7: Can't get HDMI audio - the hdmi device does not appear under the playback devices

so yeah you've probably gathered my problem from my title.

i have an integrated intel graphics chip (interestingly enough the intel control pane,l through which i used to control the majority of the devices functions, did not survive the upgrade... it is nowhere to be found)

so i've updated the drivers, and checked the playback devices, and my hdmi cables are plugged in

i get video but no audio, and am not sure i am just missing something simple.

eitherway i've done a lot of searching and have yet to find an answer any help would be much appreciated!

Hello spedlifeshow,

The issue here can be one of several issues, the following may apply:

  • The HDMI graphics card may support HDMI Video, but may not support HDMI Audio
  • You may need to set the HDMI audio device as the default sound device
  • You may need to update your HDMI video card drivers for your version of Windows
  • If your HDMI video card does not support audio, you may need to connect additional audio cables between the PC and TV

    I also have the xps m1530 and recently did a clean install of Win 7. I have an HDMI connection between my laptop and AV Receiver. The only audio I get is 2 channel Prologic. I'd like to get 5.1 DD and be able to play WMV HD files. Is there a way to get this? When I had Vista running I also had Cyberlink's PowerDVD which allowed me to pass through the DD 5.1 sound. I haven't installed PowerDVD yet; but, I think that only works with DVD's and Blurays and not other files (AC3, WMV HD).

    I have a xps m1530 and solve the problem by installing the driver for the Nvidia 8600 that came out on December 4 (195.62 WHQL - http://la.nvidia.com/object/notebook\_winvista\_win7\_x64\_195.62\_whql\_la.html)

    I struggled with getting both audio and video through HDMI as well.  I have a Sony VAIO VGN series connected to a brand new Sony 52" Z-series LCD and all I could get was video (looked great too!).  I took the laptop upstairs and connected with a different HDMI cable to 32" Panasonic LCD...same issue....great video but not audio.

    I checked every W7 setting I knew and no luck.  Got sound out of VGA + headphone ->audio jack but not via HDMI. 

    I searched the Internet for answers - nothing concrete.

    Went to Intel to download driver update tool and it came back unsupported.

    Called Sony and went through ____ with tech support.  Finally was IM'ing with a Sony service agent who revealed that the HDMI audio drivers are included with the HDMI video drivers.  I went to Sony's support site, entered my laptop in, searched on latest video drivers and downloaded the newest drivers and VOILA!  Worked awesome.

    The misconception is that this is an audio driver vs. video.  Hope this helps and feel free to contact me at *** Email address is removed for privacy *** for questions.  I got pissed off for weeks about this problem so I'm happy to help.

    Frankly I never suspected it could be a Windows issue or even the video player.  I suspected it was something to do with the physical HDMI port and was told from one Sony agent that *some* laptops only support video from their HDMI ports.  Never believed it.

    for anyone stumbling across this problem make sure your drivers up-to-date. once this is this is set, go to "sound" from the control panel. when the screen opens up, you should see a list of a few devices, make sure the component that you hooked your hdmi (such as a tv or monitor) is correctly installed. to do this, right click the device and click "set as default" when you do this then go into the next tab in sound to text. if you hear it from the monitor it is good. but in order for it to work you must disable the speakers from your computer by left clicking on the first tab in "sound". once disabled it should be ready to go, it worked for me.
