windows 7: Can't get HDMI audio - the hdmi device does not appear under the playback devices

so yeah you've probably gathered my problem from my title.

i have an integrated intel graphics chip (interestingly enough the intel control pane,l through which i used to control the majority of the devices functions, did not survive the upgrade... it is nowhere to be found)

so i've updated the drivers, and checked the playback devices, and my hdmi cables are plugged in

i get video but no audio, and am not sure i am just missing something simple.

eitherway i've done a lot of searching and have yet to find an answer any help would be much appreciated!

Hello spedlifeshow,

The issue here can be one of several issues, the following may apply:

  • The HDMI graphics card may support HDMI Video, but may not support HDMI Audio
  • You may need to set the HDMI audio device as the default sound device
  • You may need to update your HDMI video card drivers for your version of Windows
  • If your HDMI video card does not support audio, you may need to connect additional audio cables between the PC and TV

For the steps for some of these issues see the following No sound tutorial (look on the Check your Hardware tab under HDMI cables).

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/help/no-sound-in-windows

Hope this helps

LD.

Fixed for those of you who have the unfortunate pleasure of purchasing a Dell M1530 XPS laptop....I had the same situation as reported above using a Samsung A550 television and Nvidia 8400gs..Running Windows Vista everything worked fine (x86)...Did a clean restore to Windows 7 Ultimate (still x86) and had video and audio working for a few weeks until out of nowhere the lack of an audio signal......Spent a few hours rolling drivers back and (up) for both the sigmatel audio interface and nvidia card until I finally uninstalled the latest NVIDIA driver and installed the driver for Vista from the Dell website; R200183. Now audio and video work...The only issue with this driver version is that my display is not consistenly recognized and I sometimes have to plug and unplug the HDMI cable from my laptop but I prefer this than no audio support at all....

    Hope this helps.

Had the same problem.  I have a sony vaio VGN laptop.  Just a week ago they released an updated driver to the video card that fix the no sound out put through the hdmi.

Here is the link that solved my problem:

"No audio from the TV using an HDMI™ connection during playback of an AVCHD or WMV file using Windows Media Player software"
