windows 7: Can't get HDMI audio - the hdmi device does not appear under the playback devices

so yeah you've probably gathered my problem from my title.

i have an integrated intel graphics chip (interestingly enough the intel control pane,l through which i used to control the majority of the devices functions, did not survive the upgrade... it is nowhere to be found)

so i've updated the drivers, and checked the playback devices, and my hdmi cables are plugged in

i get video but no audio, and am not sure i am just missing something simple.

eitherway i've done a lot of searching and have yet to find an answer any help would be much appreciated!

Hello spedlifeshow,

The issue here can be one of several issues, the following may apply:

The HDMI graphics card may support HDMI Video, but may not support HDMI Audio
You may need to set the HDMI audio device as the default sound device
You may need to update your HDMI video card drivers for your version of Windows
If your HDMI video card does not support audio, you may need to connect additional audio cables between the PC and TV

After about the 7th time trying this, my computer finally got the hint and uninstalled the SigmaTel driver and installed the general Microsoft one dated 7/13/2009. All my devices appear again under the Playback Devices. The other driver was dated 2/19/2008 and produced by IDT. I'm no Microsoft proponent myself, but after almost giving up, I'm gonna say it's a driver problem on the audio manufacturer's side. IDT just points their finger to your OEM but it doesn't help if it the same version or a year and a half old.

I had the same problem with my HD TV after upgrading to Windows 7. What I did was updated the drives to my chipset. I learned on here that with HMDI you need to have your Video card updated and not by microsoft. You need to go to the manufacturer web site and download it directly from there. I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 with an Intel 965 chipset and once I updated to the windows 7 driver from intel, everything started to work. I did this on 11/20/09 and as soon as I hooked back up to my HD TV in the sound box it also showed the HDMI TV connection. Then I made it my default sound choice and low and behold I was so happy to have sound. Worked on this for two nights and it still amazes me that microsoft updates would not catch this. Thats the problem with being a pioneer in electronics. We get to solve their issues.

Hi everyone HDMI Sound Problem Solved,

After installing the new windows 7, the hdmi icon on the playback devices menu disappeared.

Here is what i did and got the icon back and make the hdmi sound work again.

The intel graphic cards needs to be updated. The link below will take you to intel site and it will detect the required updates for your system.

Run the program and install the required updates and restart windows. HDMI icon will be back and the sound will work normal like it used to.

I hope this will solve everyone’s problem with the hdmi sound issue. I have hp Pavilion dv6, i m happy to hear the crisp clear sound again from my Philips HTS-8100 sound bar.

This failed for me. I have a Gateway M-151X , ran the upgade inspection tool and all was well, updgraded to 7 and it keeps saying my dirver is bad and the troubleshooter reinstalls it, then says the reinstall fails. Then when I go to the gateway site they are no help. Then I go the intel site and they tell me to run the update detector, but when I do it fails and shows this:

But of course there is no way to tell Intel that there software doesn't work.
