windows 7: Can't get HDMI audio - the hdmi device does not appear under the playback devices

so yeah you've probably gathered my problem from my title.

i have an integrated intel graphics chip (interestingly enough the intel control pane,l through which i used to control the majority of the devices functions, did not survive the upgrade... it is nowhere to be found)

so i've updated the drivers, and checked the playback devices, and my hdmi cables are plugged in

i get video but no audio, and am not sure i am just missing something simple.

eitherway i've done a lot of searching and have yet to find an answer any help would be much appreciated!

Hello spedlifeshow,

The issue here can be one of several issues, the following may apply:

  • The HDMI graphics card may support HDMI Video, but may not support HDMI Audio
  • You may need to set the HDMI audio device as the default sound device
  • You may need to update your HDMI video card drivers for your version of Windows
  • If your HDMI video card does not support audio, you may need to connect additional audio cables between the PC and TV

    In some cases this a genuine issue with the Graphics driver itself and no matter what you do you will not be able to solve it. (Not with the HDMI Audio Driver)

    I have a Latitude E6510 with a Quadro NVS3100M.

    If I install the drivers it came with: nVidia 189.xx (Dell R267782) and then install any version of nVidia's HDMI audio driver or even the default Microsoft HDMI audio driver I have sound over HDMI.

    However, if I install any of the two graphics driver updates from Dell or any of the reference drivers from the nVidia website, the HDMI Audio Device does not show up in the Playback Tab and neither does it show up in the nVidia Control panel. However the drivers get installed fine and you can see the device in device manager.

    So unfortunately even though I hate it, I have to stick to the old graphics driver that came with my laptop :(((

    I have contacted both Dell & nVidia about it, got pretty high up, their engineers could even replicate the issue but they still have no fix for it. :(((

    Device Manager -> System Devices or Sound Controllers -> High Definition Audio Controller.

    See if you have any halt icon on it, and if so right click and enable the device. This worked for me.

    I'm not sure if I had the same problem as y'all since I didn't have much time to read through everything. I only had video display through HDMI and no sound. I had been using Windows 7 before the problem arose. I thought the original problem had been that i had accidentally deleted the option to put audio through HDMI through the Realtek sound manager thing, and although the option is still not visible through Realtek to use my TV as audio I found that going through the control panel > Display > Connect to a Projector (Right Side) > Projector Only, Audio & Video will both go to my TV. If the problem had been resolved I apologize for the double post, but if not I hope this helps!
