windows 7: Can't get HDMI audio - the hdmi device does not appear under the playback devices

so yeah you've probably gathered my problem from my title.

i have an integrated intel graphics chip (interestingly enough the intel control pane,l through which i used to control the majority of the devices functions, did not survive the upgrade... it is nowhere to be found)

so i've updated the drivers, and checked the playback devices, and my hdmi cables are plugged in

i get video but no audio, and am not sure i am just missing something simple.

eitherway i've done a lot of searching and have yet to find an answer any help would be much appreciated!

Hello spedlifeshow,

The issue here can be one of several issues, the following may apply:

  • The HDMI graphics card may support HDMI Video, but may not support HDMI Audio
  • You may need to set the HDMI audio device as the default sound device
  • You may need to update your HDMI video card drivers for your version of Windows
  • If your HDMI video card does not support audio, you may need to connect additional audio cables between the PC and TV

    Try searching for "Change Sound Card Settings" down in the start buttons search bar and then this should pop up a list of your sound devices. You should see the HDMI settings on there. Right click on it and click on set as your default device. And that sound do it!

    There was an upgrade in my facts, too.  Actually, the drive got wiped.  I installed all the latest chipset drivers and a new OS.

    I have NO other audio devices except for the audio on my ATI 5890 video card.

    I had the very same problem, and found that if I went to the internal laptop speakers in the sounds section and disabled them, the sound then transferred to the TV through the HDMI

    This has the ring of truth.  When I get my computer out of storage, I'm going to try this one.

    The version of the graphics driver was the only thing that changed.

    What still bothers me, though, is that it did it with AMD/ATI drivers, too.

    That's why I feel the OS must be part of the problem.

    Keep working on it folks.  We will get to the bottom of this eventually if we just persist,

    PERSIST, ADAPT, AND OVERCOME.
