windows 7: Can't get HDMI audio - the hdmi device does not appear under the playback devices

so yeah you've probably gathered my problem from my title.

i have an integrated intel graphics chip (interestingly enough the intel control pane,l through which i used to control the majority of the devices functions, did not survive the upgrade... it is nowhere to be found)

so i've updated the drivers, and checked the playback devices, and my hdmi cables are plugged in

i get video but no audio, and am not sure i am just missing something simple.

eitherway i've done a lot of searching and have yet to find an answer any help would be much appreciated!

Hello spedlifeshow,

The issue here can be one of several issues, the following may apply:

The HDMI graphics card may support HDMI Video, but may not support HDMI Audio
You may need to set the HDMI audio device as the default sound device
You may need to update your HDMI video card drivers for your version of Windows
If your HDMI video card does not support audio, you may need to connect additional audio cables between the PC and TV

I have a dell m6400 laptop with a quadro 2700m. It has display port out to hdmi with a cable. I wasn't able to get sound out to the tv with Windows 7 initially, but I was able to get it out of Win Vista on the same machine(dual boot). All that I had to do was update the video card drivers to the latest manufacturer issued ones and change the playback device to digital audio(s/pdif), but for those of you who have an hdmi out socket on your computers, the playback device to choose would be the hdmi device. It doesn't seem like a video card driver issue, but in this case it was exactly that. I hope that this helps someone.

Thank goodness I'm not alone there. I just installed an HD Radeon 4550 on my Windows 7 PC. I had to get a DVI-HDMI cable to solve the audio/video skipping. Then I connected my PC to my Sony Bravia HD TV and that's when I noticed there was no audio. I downloaded and installed the Realtek 64bit HDMI drivers (which most recommended on the web) but still no sound. The HDMI output is listed as "not plugged in" in my device manager. However, if I use a headset, I hear sound just fine (>_____<). I remember someone on the web recommended rolling back the drivers. Haven't tried that yet.

Ok .......My fix was..........................

Connect the S/Pdif cable from video card to motherboard.

Using a GeForce 9600 video card to Samsung HDTV via HDMI. Adjust the settings (now that you can) and you are done.
