windows 7: Can't get HDMI audio - the hdmi device does not appear under the playback devices

so yeah you've probably gathered my problem from my title.

i have an integrated intel graphics chip (interestingly enough the intel control pane,l through which i used to control the majority of the devices functions, did not survive the upgrade... it is nowhere to be found)

so i've updated the drivers, and checked the playback devices, and my hdmi cables are plugged in

i get video but no audio, and am not sure i am just missing something simple.

eitherway i've done a lot of searching and have yet to find an answer any help would be much appreciated!

Hello spedlifeshow,

The issue here can be one of several issues, the following may apply:

  • The HDMI graphics card may support HDMI Video, but may not support HDMI Audio
  • You may need to set the HDMI audio device as the default sound device
  • You may need to update your HDMI video card drivers for your version of Windows
  • If your HDMI video card does not support audio, you may need to connect additional audio cables between the PC and TV

    Please, just answer for yourself this one question:  If the problem is Windows 7, then why do I have HDMI audio working flawlessly on two different computers, both running 7 RC? 

    Hint:  I don't work at Microsoft, and I have no affiliation with the company.  I've received no technical support from anyone on the inside.

    In any case, this thread has devolved to a bunch of feel-bad slamming, so I will no longer be monitoring it.  (Don't bother replying to this message, because I won't see it.)

    This is really problem of Windows Media Player. I've solved the problem in the following way. Whatever you select as defualt communication device on the sound icon in the right bottom corner it does not help. Here are steps that helped me:

    1. Start Windows Media Player on any video file
    2. Make sure that you can see the video and sound on the laptop.
    3. Right mouse click on Windows Media Player area (on video)

        More options->Devices tab -> Select Speakers in the list of Devices -> click the properties button

    1. In the pop-uo modal window "Speaker Properties" -> Select the audio device: => Select "Digital Audio (HDMI) (2-High Definition Audio Device)" ( on my laptop )
    2. Save all window
    3. Close and restart Windows Media Player
    4. Connect HDMI cable and swith on TV to get video from HDMI

    The sound + video works fine on my TV.

    If you want to get back audio on your laptop you should do back process and select "Speakers / Headphones ..." in Windows Media Player :)

    By using this not very conveniant way I can switch audit to HDMI... It looks like problem with Windows Media Player + Windows 7.0, hope Microsoft will fix it in the RCxxx.

    +1. I have the same problem with Windows 7.0. It worked before on Vista without any problem but it does not work now. I have Dell 1530 + Samsung TV. When I read these posts I understood that it is only wasting my time to find this answer as this is not driver or hardware problem but really Windows 7.0 problem as I tried everything. So, the result is the same - video works fine but audio does not. :(

    I agree thinkingbiggar. I was accused of having a hissy fit when I complained but I thought like you that this was a feedback board to MS developers - but its just a place to capture problems and keep them quiet.

    The reality is that this problem has dogged beta and final versions of 7 - is not restricted to one manufacturer or graphics engine and all we get is ""its a driver issue". Well who is investigating the issue ? what further investigation has been done with anyone on this board who has reported a problem? I for one will no longer champion MS - they sell u stuff then leave you to hang. Just look at the number of postings and we are just the tip of the iceberg because we have enough nounce to try and troubleshoot

    • the average joe doesn't know that this board exists!
