windows 7: Can't get HDMI audio - the hdmi device does not appear under the playback devices

so yeah you've probably gathered my problem from my title.

i have an integrated intel graphics chip (interestingly enough the intel control pane,l through which i used to control the majority of the devices functions, did not survive the upgrade... it is nowhere to be found)

so i've updated the drivers, and checked the playback devices, and my hdmi cables are plugged in

i get video but no audio, and am not sure i am just missing something simple.

eitherway i've done a lot of searching and have yet to find an answer any help would be much appreciated!

Hello spedlifeshow,

The issue here can be one of several issues, the following may apply:

  • The HDMI graphics card may support HDMI Video, but may not support HDMI Audio
  • You may need to set the HDMI audio device as the default sound device
  • You may need to update your HDMI video card drivers for your version of Windows
  • If your HDMI video card does not support audio, you may need to connect additional audio cables between the PC and TV

    Hello windows 7 team:

    This is my first Post here , and i'm confident this may be the fix for you. vaio vgnfw370j with vista x64 my hdmi audio out never gave me problems, but after upgrading to win7ultimate i lost that functionality. my intel driver was from 2008, no update available... finally after a reinstall of driver with no results i said screw this...

    1) back up your current driver if you're scared 2) uninstall driver and select remove driver files 3) scan for hardware changes, win7 will install a generic hdmi audio driver, (dated 2009)

    my hdmi audio instantly worked

    after reading some threads up above, i want to recommend that you do a manufacturer search for updated drivers before using my method. in my case, with intel/hdmi built in to motherboard, no updated driver was available. i wouldnt be surprised if it also worked on other devices that weren't functioning properly.

    Hi,

    I'm having the same problem, and have been on the phone with both Microsoft and Hp all day trying to solve it. I have an HP Pavilion dv4-1125nr laptop and am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I use to be able to get video and audio while running Vista, but I'am only able to receive video now when I plug my laptop in to my Panasonic tv through the HDMI cord with Windows 7. I have used all the suggestions in this thread: updating the audio drivers, updating the video drivers and nothing seems to work. I am still not able to see the HDMI out option on the Playback device option after right clicking on Sound. I have looked up in device manager which Audio drivers I am currently using and it is IDT Audio driver and a Intel High Definition (HDMI) driver. On Hp.com under the support and drivers for my laptop they only have the IDT drivers which I have installed, and on Intel they do not have an update for their driver. I have also updated my video driver which is also Intel, nothing seems to work, even though your previous suggestions seemed to have worked for others, they haven't for me. After nine hours on the phone, being transfered between HP and Microsoft I am losing hope, PLEASE HELP. Thank you before hand for any suggestions.

    I also have a Dell XPS M1530 and had the same problem making a Custom install from Vista Ultimate 32  to Windows 7 Pro 32. I uninstalled the generic driver installed by W7 and from Dell, downloaded and installed driver R190517 version 6.10.0.5866. That is the Sigmatel HD Audio CODEC for the integrated Sound Blaster Audigy card on the M1530. Thisl sets everything prior to W7. Please try it, for it will work.
