windows 7: Can't get HDMI audio - the hdmi device does not appear under the playback devices

so yeah you've probably gathered my problem from my title.

i have an integrated intel graphics chip (interestingly enough the intel control pane,l through which i used to control the majority of the devices functions, did not survive the upgrade... it is nowhere to be found)

so i've updated the drivers, and checked the playback devices, and my hdmi cables are plugged in

i get video but no audio, and am not sure i am just missing something simple.

eitherway i've done a lot of searching and have yet to find an answer any help would be much appreciated!

Hello spedlifeshow,

The issue here can be one of several issues, the following may apply:

  • The HDMI graphics card may support HDMI Video, but may not support HDMI Audio
  • You may need to set the HDMI audio device as the default sound device
  • You may need to update your HDMI video card drivers for your version of Windows
  • If your HDMI video card does not support audio, you may need to connect additional audio cables between the PC and TV

    Were you ever able to resolve this?  I have been trying to get it fixed for months now and MS support only says to download more drivers.  I have downloaded and reinstalled drivers over and over, reinstalled windows, gone into the bios and still 'no audio device drivers'.  I'm about ready to give up.

    Thanks abhishekm30 . I had the same problem (HDMI audio not plugged in) on a sony vaio vgn-fw398y with a readon hd 3650. I updated the Realtek driver.

    http://www.realtek.com.tw/ -> downloads -> High Definition Audio Codecs . In my case I downloaded  ATI HDMI Audio Device

    For all of you out there having issues with an ATI card and this problem, this worked for me. After hours of scouring the internet looking for a solution I'm glad I stumbled upon this. (Sony Vaio VGN-FW390 with an ATI Radeon 3650)

    On another note - While this is consistently a "driver issue," I don't think Windows 7 is completely free of blame. My HDMI Audio worked fine before I upgraded from Vista, and the problem arose immediately after I tried to hook my laptop back up to my TV. I rolled back drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled, tried a million different methods of updates and this is the only one that worked.

    The problem is widespread across ATI, Nvidia and Intel chipsets. And I'm pretty sure people with every chipset reported it working before upgrading to Windows 7. So it's probable the cause was with Windows, not the drivers. I'm just thankful that the card manufacturers were quick to fix the problem.

    I have the same issue, but was able to get my sound to work. Vista combined audio and video control together automatically. Whet I found is that I had to plug my laptop in and go to sound settings and set my output to my Samsung HDTV. Until the problem is resolved to work like vista, you have to change the setting manually between your pc speakers and your tv.

    I noticed that if you use windows media player you can choose your audio output for that player, by going to tools, options, devices, doublle click audio output select you tv in the drop down.

    hi you have to go to intel website and upgrade graphics driver for your laptop and it will solve the proble i had same proble it's now working so just do like that
