windows 7: Can't get HDMI audio - the hdmi device does not appear under the playback devices

so yeah you've probably gathered my problem from my title.

i have an integrated intel graphics chip (interestingly enough the intel control pane,l through which i used to control the majority of the devices functions, did not survive the upgrade... it is nowhere to be found)

so i've updated the drivers, and checked the playback devices, and my hdmi cables are plugged in

i get video but no audio, and am not sure i am just missing something simple.

eitherway i've done a lot of searching and have yet to find an answer any help would be much appreciated!

Hello spedlifeshow,

The issue here can be one of several issues, the following may apply:

  • The HDMI graphics card may support HDMI Video, but may not support HDMI Audio
  • You may need to set the HDMI audio device as the default sound device
  • You may need to update your HDMI video card drivers for your version of Windows
  • If your HDMI video card does not support audio, you may need to connect additional audio cables between the PC and TV

    Thank you  for your advise!

    Unfortunately I have problems to connect to TV as projector.

    If I start the system with both PC Monitor and TV HDMI connected the TV becomes the primary screen.

    If I start the system and connect the TV after system has started the system cannot find  a projector.

    Do below steps...

    1. Connect to your TV via HDMI
    2. Switch to projector only (on keypad press Windows button + P)
    3. Go to >Control Panel choose >Hardware & Sound then >Sound and >Playback tab
    4. Click on digital TV and set as default

    Test by youtube, you should have sound. Switch to Extend (Windows key + P)...

    This should should work since i tested it to several different system, switching to Projector only is most important step aside from connecting your computer to the TV. Extending or duplicating your monitor will probably not show your digital TV on the playback sound so choose Projector only. After doing this steps Windows 7 should automatically play audio where video is being played.

    Desperatly working on the HDMI problem I visited Realteks hompage and found that they have a new release of their drivers. Evidently they are aware of the problem since this is their third release within 4 or 5 weeks. Unfortunately the new driver did not solve the problem.

    After one hour the query "hdmi win 7 no sound" has increased by 30.000 persons. Since Win 7 HDMI users are only a fraction of the total Win 7 users it is very evident that all HDMI users have problems. Microsoft has to handle this problem more serious!
