windows 7: Can't get HDMI audio - the hdmi device does not appear under the playback devices

so yeah you've probably gathered my problem from my title.

i have an integrated intel graphics chip (interestingly enough the intel control pane,l through which i used to control the majority of the devices functions, did not survive the upgrade... it is nowhere to be found)

so i've updated the drivers, and checked the playback devices, and my hdmi cables are plugged in

i get video but no audio, and am not sure i am just missing something simple.

eitherway i've done a lot of searching and have yet to find an answer any help would be much appreciated!

Hello spedlifeshow,

The issue here can be one of several issues, the following may apply:

  • The HDMI graphics card may support HDMI Video, but may not support HDMI Audio
  • You may need to set the HDMI audio device as the default sound device
  • You may need to update your HDMI video card drivers for your version of Windows
  • If your HDMI video card does not support audio, you may need to connect additional audio cables between the PC and TV

    I have the same problem on my HP laptop after upgrading from Vista to W7.

    This is how I resolved it.

    I'd first like to say thanks to all the posts as each one helped resolve my issue, but there were a couple that actually resolved it.

    I first did what everyone else did by trying to get the latest drivers from either the manufacturer, Microsoft, or Intel.

    None worked for me.

    Then I read a post above that resolved their issue by removing the HDMI audio from the device manager and it's drivers. Then restarting windows and letting it reinstall it upon startup.

    This did the trick, it appeared in the list and I just needed to set it as the default.

    Oh, I had also right clicked in the Sound -> Playback window to make sure all disabled and disconnected items were visible.

    I made HP aware of this as I had originally called them to troubleshoot the problem.

    I hope this helps others as well.

    Here is how I solved my problem:

    My HP laptop dv5 has the Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family installed:

    I downloaded and installed the latest version driver and restarted my laptop, the HDMI showed right up in the playback device list.

    Hp Pavilion dv9500z notebook.

    Nvidia Geforce 8400m GS

    I had luck with Nvidia 179.48

    Driver Provider Nvidia

    Driver Date 1/30/2009

    Driver Version 7.15.11.7948

    High Definiton Audio Device

    Driver Provider Microsoft

    Driver Date 7/13/2009

    Driver Version 6.1.7600.16385

    I tried the latest Nvidia drivers which worked ok in windows +P (Duplicate mode ok)

    But when I went to Windows +P (Projector mode it put audio in mute mode. I could see the signal but like I said the software

    put in mute mode. Now I don't know who is responsible for this if it's the driver writer's  or with Windows 7.

    This worked for about a day-day and half then the screen went into corruption again.
