windows 7: Can't get HDMI audio - the hdmi device does not appear under the playback devices

so yeah you've probably gathered my problem from my title.

i have an integrated intel graphics chip (interestingly enough the intel control pane,l through which i used to control the majority of the devices functions, did not survive the upgrade... it is nowhere to be found)

so i've updated the drivers, and checked the playback devices, and my hdmi cables are plugged in

i get video but no audio, and am not sure i am just missing something simple.

eitherway i've done a lot of searching and have yet to find an answer any help would be much appreciated!

Hello spedlifeshow,

The issue here can be one of several issues, the following may apply:

  • The HDMI graphics card may support HDMI Video, but may not support HDMI Audio
  • You may need to set the HDMI audio device as the default sound device
  • You may need to update your HDMI video card drivers for your version of Windows
  • If your HDMI video card does not support audio, you may need to connect additional audio cables between the PC and TV

    I have finally solved the problem, I'm so Happy! I was searching the internet for updates for my drivers and I came across something called DriverMax. It's a programme that searches your computer for the latest drivers. so I thought I'd give it a go and see wat it finds.

    It said that loads of my drivers where out of date including my audio and HDMI drivers, so I downloaded them and restarted the computer and hey presto I now Have HDMI device listed in my sound options.

    I had turned off automatic updates as well.   It was installing a bad printer driver over one that was working just fine.

    I had the same issue with my Intel G45 chipset on a Dell Studio 540. It was working fine, then the next time I turned the system on, no HDMI sound on Window 7 Ultimate. After a lot of digging, I noticed the display driver (not audio) was dated from August 2009. I went to Intel's website, got the latest G45 graphics driver, installed it, and voila SOUND!

    So what happened? Windows update had automatically installed an old driver. Moral of the story is to turn off automatic updates and tell Windows to notify, but not install updates until you approve them. Then scrupulously review all updates.

    I have done all of the boot sequence several times with no luck . Maybe something happened when I upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista, it worked fine before.
