Vista/No Sound/Failed to play test tone

i have recently upgraded to vista and found out that i have no sound. the driver (vista version) for my on board sound card seems fine but when i try to play a song on windows Media Player, i get a msg of  "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file. For additional assistance, click Web Help."  and i also get a "Failed to play test tone" msg when i try to test my speakers. i thought it was because of vista dosent support my crappy on board sound card so i got a new one.

i have just installed a Creative Audigy SE and have downloaded the driver for windows vista. again, in device manager, everything seems fine, the driver is fine, the device is working. but i still get the "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file. For additional assistance, click Web Help." when i try to play a song, as well as the "failed to play test tone" msg when i click on the Test button. please help me, i am tired of using a computer with no sound.

This forum probably isn't going to be so helpful with the no-sound issues.  My usual suggestions are to fiddle with drivers and so forth, but I think you're way beyond that.  You might want to try the pro audio forum (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=351&SiteID=1), even though that technically isn't the right place for audio support issues either...

    oh thanks, i found it. after changing the value to 0 and rebooting my pc + playing an audio file using the Windows Media Player ,

    i find a file called "AudioSrv.Evm.001" iam not sure what kind of program i should use to open it, or how to post it up here if i cant even read whats inside. please tell me what i should do now.

    there was a Windows Update after for the Creative Audigy SE and i did installed it. thanks again.

    by the way, after changing the value from 0 to 1, when i try to play an audio file, the messege i get now is

    "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly." but the problem is, i do find the device in my Device Manager and it says that both of the device and the driver are working.

    By HKLM I meant HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.  I'm too used to using the abbreviation =)

    BTW, are there any updates available on Windows Update for your device?

    Matt,

    1. The driver version is 5.12.0001.2001 (English).
    2. Yes I get the same "failed to play test tone" error msg.
    3. I cannot find the "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\WMI\AutoLogger\Audio" that you have mensioned.

    when I run regedit, I only see five files which are HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, HKEY_USERS, HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG. Which one should I click on to? Thank you so much for your help.
