fix problem "local only" when connection is across a wireless connection

access point appear: unidentified network

internet appear bloqued

access: Local only

connection: wireless connection.

Please help check what is the reason "local only".

ip is assigned automatically by DHCP, but is not possible to connect to internet, the problem appear only on windows vista Pcs, in my other computer with XP version the connection is good.

I have Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1.

    I found the solution to my issue (which seemed the same as the original post).  I was getting the unidentified network with local only access from both wireless and wired connections on my Vista laptop while all of my other computers could connect (one XP, one Linux and one Windows 7).  Here was the solution (found at http://geekswithblogs.net/mattcampbell/archive/2007/09/30/Resetting-your-whole-IP-stack-in-Vista.aspx):

    Run cmd.exe as administrator and do the following:

    ipconfig /f

    nbtstat -R

    nbtstat -RR

    netsh int reset all

    netsh int ip reset

    net winsock reset

    I received an error on one or two of these, but just kept going.  Reboot the computer and the connection came back for both wired and wireless.  Hope this helps someone else.

    I have this problem also, here are some stats about my computer:

    Network adapter: Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T Controller

    Some other stats: cpuz savefile

    When i start the computer it works fine but after sometime it goes to "Local Only" for some weird reason, honestly i have no idea what that reason might be. No matter if i'm doing anything on a computer or it's just in idle mode, this will happen anyway at some point. Time is always random and impossible to predict when this will happen. Internet is working fine and i see no effects except it's just annoying when it shows "Local Only". I would like to get this solved also. Thanks.

    Hi tirofijo,

    Thank you for taking the time to post your issue.

    I’m going to need you to answer a few questions for me.

    1.       When did this first start?

    2.       Have you ever been able to use the wireless?

    3.       What is the make and model of the router and wireless card you are using?

    Can you please bypass the router and hook the Ethernet cable directly from the modem to your computer and check to see if you can access the internet?

    The following Microsoft Article goes over a certain situation where Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers. It does include steps to attempt to address the issue but I would like to know the outcome of bypassing the router before proceeding with the steps outlined in the article.
