After many problems, I managed to get my Epson RX600 printer/scanner working under Windows 7 Professional.

Now the error in the title line keeps appearing when I try to scan.  Epson support won't help as they say its a Microsoft problem.  Any suggestions appreciated.

Well i have found out a perfect way to solve this problem. It worked for me so I'll be hoping it works for you too

This is how you have to do it. You need to enable WIA - Windows Image Acquisition. now to do that follow these steps.

  1. Click on start or the Window thingy.
  2. Type Services or Services.msc in the search part.
  3. Now scroll to the following services in the window that got opened.

Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

DCOM Server Process Launcher

RPC Endpoint Mapper

Shell Hardware Detection

Enable those services. To do so right click on them, click properties and make it automatic. Once you enable all of them start them. After all the services are started scroll for "Windows Image Acquisition" make this automatic too and start it. Just reboot your PC and you should be good to roll :D.

Scan all you want :) Problem solved.

What happens if you just click OK and continue the scanning operation?

As according to the below provided article this error message can be safely ignored in case of a picture scanning operation -

Also the link for the driver I provided works for both Vista 32-bit and 64-bit operating system as stated by the Epson website. The link directs to TWAIN Driver v3.04A for Windows Vista 32-bit and 64-bit Editions.

****Hope this helps. Let us know the results.

I tried your suggestion and when the program ran it errored stating the version of Windows was not supported.  I assume this is because the installation is for 64 bit and using compatibility mode takes it backwards. I did try running it as normal but the original error message [as in header] still appears. If I go into the printer options to set a scanning profile, I'm told it isn't ready/initialized.

I would suggest you to refer to the below link and download the exe file on your computer at a known location. You may refer to the below link to download the exe file for the scanning function of your computer. The driver works for Windows Vista 64-bit and you may try installing the Vista 64-bit driver in compatibility mode on Windows 7. Refer to the below steps to install the driver-

    1. After downloading the exe file on your computer. Right click the exe file and select the option of properties .
    2. Now in the properties window you may click the compatibility tab. Here check mark the option to Run the program in compatibility mode for – and select the operating system as Windows Vista.
    3. Now click on Apply and OK. And check if the file gets installed and works for your all-in- one printer especially the scanner. ****

You may refer to the below link to download the scanner driver for your all-in-one printer for Vista 64-bit and install it in Windows 7 -

    Windows Vista 64-bit driver

Thanks for taking the trouble Meghmala.

I've tried all the options you offered [apart from the last] without any success.  The compatibility option doesn't seem to arise as a selection option.

    My quest continues!
