usb device not recognized in windows 7

So it seems MS has a problem with " usb device not recognized in windows 7 ". A Google search will find no real solutions to the problem. I haven't found one hear ether. How can I have a handful of flash drives and external hard drives that will not work on only 2 Win7 systems that I know of ,yet work on others ? I never needed to download drivers from anyone to make them work on any other OS . I just plug them in and the work ... THE 1st TIME... not after trying all things that don't.  This is something that needs a REAL FIX. I should not have to pay Tech Support to find out why. This is clearly an OS Win7 problem. Hi DJBigBang,

1. Have any USB or external drives worked on your computer? 2. What is the make and model of your computer?

As all the hardware devices have drivers associated similarly USB devices also have it. Sometimes proper drivers do not get detected after the initial installation so reinstallation of the drivers helps resolve the issues.

You may check after uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers if you are able to connect. You may disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

1.     ClickStart, and then click Control Panel.

2.     ClickSystem and Maintenance, click System, and then clickDevice Manager.

Note If Control Panel is in Classic View, double-clickSystem, and then click Device Manager.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or clickAllow.

**3.**In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

Check if at all there is an exclamation mark along the driver, it suggests issues with the driver installed.

4.     Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

If you still face the same issue then you may check for the updated USB device drivers using windows update. Refer to the below link for assistance–

If the issue sill persists I would request you to check for chipset driver updates which you can get at the manufacturer website. The chipset drivers normally incorporate USB controller drivers as well.

There is an old Windows XP KB article that was recently updated with multiple steps to resolve these types of issues. The KB covers Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 with step by step methods. See if this helps.

    hi

    i am using windows 7. i have hp printer hp deskjet 3500 series.when i connect to it it generates messages that usb device not recognized..i would be really thankfull if you help me out because i need to print my assignment. :(

    I've had a similar Win7x64 USB issue, with one odd difference (I will describe below), and likewise I have researched this issue as much as I can, and tried all the fixes mentioned in this thread and elsewhere, all to no avail. 

    I have a custom PC that had WinXP on it, 3GHz E8400 Core2Duo, Intel DP45SG board, 8GB DDR3 Corsair RAM, GeForce GT 250, SB Xi-Fi, Razer Lechesis 4000 DPI mouse, standard keyboard, 750W Corsair PSU, etc.  ALL USB ports worked perfectly (2 front, ~4 rear) for years, and the only notable issue with the system as a whole was very seldomly from a cold-boot, I'd get a boot failure with POST code, which turned out to be an issue with my mobo's firmware version, which I resolved by flashing to the newest version.

    I recently bought a GeForce GTX 580 3GB DDR5 and 2 TB HDD to replace both older existing parts in preparation for installing Win7 64 bit.  Again, prior to any hardware swap or OS swap, ALL USB ports were fine.  After installing Win7, I got the same symptoms everyone else has, with one interesting difference:

    1 of 2 front USB ports WORKS PERFECTLY with ANY device I plug into it.  However, if I plug ANY device into the other front port, I receive the "USB device not recognized" error.  I have only ever consistently used 2 of the ~4 back USB ports, and likewise 1 of them now fails as just described, while the other one still functions PERFECTLY.

    To me, this defies all logic, as it implies that the USB drivers on the board & Win7 are NOT the issue, since SOME of the USB ports work fine, with all devices.  I've seen stranger coincidences happen with technical issues, but I am also highly doubtful there is all of a sudden a power or internal hardware issue.

    The one aspect of my issue that I find most puzzling, and really the only lead I feel I have right now, is this:  I have about 2 or 3 more "USB Root Hub" entries in Device Manager than actual physical ports, and each entry lists the driver as Microsoft published in 2006.  Now, I've never really noticed either of these aspects before, because I've never had a reason to look into it, so I don't know how many entries-to-ports is normal and would presume their would be a more recent driver available.

    I tried updating my chipset's drivers via installer from Intel's site.  The documentation indicated it included USB drivers.  After running the installer, it prompted it was done, however I was not prompted to reboot the computer, which I immediately thought was odd.  So, I rebooted anyways and of course, the issue is not fixed, and the USB Root Hub entries still list Microsoft & 2006, which I thought odd and PRESUME should change if the update were successful.  So, I decided to manually update the drivers using the INF files, however, going over the install instructions, they indicate the files would be copied to C:\Program Files\Intel\INF... (I don't remember the exact "INF" folder name).  When I check that directory, sure enough an "Intel" folder was created with the "INF" sub directory, BUT it is totally empty.

    My thoughts now are that the Intel chipset driver installer for my board is busted somehow, but that even if they were to install, I feel it wouldn't resolve the underlying USB issue.  Other things I've done include what has already been mentioned:  disabling "legacy" USB in BIOS; uninstalling each root HUB, powering off, reinstalling; "upperlimit" & "lowerlimit" registry edit.

    I'm at a loss right now and would appreciate anyone else's ideas to help me further troubleshoot.  Any advice is welcome and thanks in advance!

    I experienced this same problem this past weekend on a Dell Inspiron 9100 (which worked fine until I upgraded it from Vista to Windows 7 Service Pack 1), and a Dell XPS 8300, fresh out of the box on Saturday.  This does seem like a Windows 7 issue.  I'm attempting the suggestions mentioned so far in this thread now.
