usb device not recognized in windows 7

So it seems MS has a problem with " usb device not recognized in windows 7 ". A Google search will find no real solutions to the problem. I haven't found one hear ether. How can I have a handful of flash drives and external hard drives that will not work on only 2 Win7 systems that I know of ,yet work on others ? I never needed to download drivers from anyone to make them work on any other OS . I just plug them in and the work ... THE 1st TIME... not after trying all things that don't.  This is something that needs a REAL FIX. I should not have to pay Tech Support to find out why. This is clearly an OS Win7 problem. Hi DJBigBang,

1. Have any USB or external drives worked on your computer? 2. What is the make and model of your computer?

As all the hardware devices have drivers associated similarly USB devices also have it. Sometimes proper drivers do not get detected after the initial installation so reinstallation of the drivers helps resolve the issues.

You may check after uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers if you are able to connect. You may disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

1.     ClickStart, and then click Control Panel.

2.     ClickSystem and Maintenance, click System, and then clickDevice Manager.

Note If Control Panel is in Classic View, double-clickSystem, and then click Device Manager.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or clickAllow.

**3.**In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

Check if at all there is an exclamation mark along the driver, it suggests issues with the driver installed.

4.     Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

If you still face the same issue then you may check for the updated USB device drivers using windows update. Refer to the below link for assistance–

If the issue sill persists I would request you to check for chipset driver updates which you can get at the manufacturer website. The chipset drivers normally incorporate USB controller drivers as well.

Hello DJBigBang,

There is an old Windows XP KB article that was recently updated with multiple steps to resolve these types of issues. The KB covers Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 with step by step methods. See if this helps.

    I also tried deleting theUSB "Upper Filter" & "Lower Filter" Entry in registry editor and checked if it fixed the problem, as  suggested byAfzal Taher  Microsoft Support Moderator  in another form . This did not work.

    1. Click “Start”, type “REGEDIT” (without quotation marks) in the “Search” bar and press Enter.

    Note: If UAC (User Account Control) pops up, please accept it.

    1. Right click “Computer” (the root node) in the left pane, click “Export” under the “File” menu, choose “All” under “Export range”, and select “Desktop”

    in the “Save” in box and type backup in “File Name”. Click “Save”.

    Note: The backup file is on the Desktop and named backup.reg. We can simply restore the registry by double-clicking the backup.reg file.

    1. Click “Start”, type “REGEDIT” (without quotation marks) in the “Search” bar and press Enter again.
    2. Locate the “UpperFilters” value under the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}

    1. On the “Edit” menu, click “Delete”, and then click “OK”.
    2. Locate the “LowerFilters” value under the same key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}

    1. On the “Edit” menu, click “Delete”, and then click “OK”.
    2. Quit Registry Editor and restart the computer.

    There are no Upper & Lower Filters .  The only things I have in 36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000 are :

    Default, Class, ClassDesc, IconPath, LowerLogoVersion, and NoInstallClass .

    In Class itself as in the picture above the only thing I have is  " Default      REG_SZ     value not set "

    Still can not see Flash Drives on the USBs

    I do not see any devices with trouble in Device Manager. Only when I plug in a drive do I see trouble. Windows can not find drivers for any of the flash drives I plug in. As for seeing Devices that are not connected, I don't see anything different after I perform the CMD steps then I see when I open Device Manager normally. The only things ever connected by USB have been Flash Drives, Ext HDD , KVM , Mouse, and Keyboard. Only the Mouse, Keyboard, and KVM have worked.  Lets not forget that Flash Drives are Plug & Play. I figure once the Flash Drive issue is solved the Ext HDDs will most likely work too as they have no drivers (not needed in Win7) and are Plug & Play too.

    Hello,

    You may use the below provided steps and check if troubleshooting the device according to the below provided steps assists you -

    1. Open cmd Prompt.
    2. At a command prompt, type the following command , and then press ENTER:

    “set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1”

    1. Type the following command a command prompt, and then press ENTER:

            “start devmgmt.msc”

    1. Troubleshoot the devices and drivers in Device Manager. (**they will be greyed out)

    NOTE: Click Show hidden devices on the View menu in Device Managers before you can see devices that are not connected to the computer.

    1. When you finish troubleshooting, close Device Manager.
    2. Type exit at the command prompt.

    Note that when you close the command prompt window, Window clears the devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 variable that you set in step 2 and prevents ghosted devices from being displayed when you click Show hidden devices.
