usb device not recognized in windows 7

So it seems MS has a problem with " usb device not recognized in windows 7 ". A Google search will find no real solutions to the problem. I haven't found one hear ether. How can I have a handful of flash drives and external hard drives that will not work on only 2 Win7 systems that I know of ,yet work on others ? I never needed to download drivers from anyone to make them work on any other OS . I just plug them in and the work ... THE 1st TIME... not after trying all things that don't.  This is something that needs a REAL FIX. I should not have to pay Tech Support to find out why. This is clearly an OS Win7 problem. Hi DJBigBang,

1. Have any USB or external drives worked on your computer? 2. What is the make and model of your computer?

As all the hardware devices have drivers associated similarly USB devices also have it. Sometimes proper drivers do not get detected after the initial installation so reinstallation of the drivers helps resolve the issues.

You may check after uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers if you are able to connect. You may disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

1.     ClickStart, and then click Control Panel.

2.     ClickSystem and Maintenance, click System, and then clickDevice Manager.

Note If Control Panel is in Classic View, double-clickSystem, and then click Device Manager.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or clickAllow.

**3.**In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

Check if at all there is an exclamation mark along the driver, it suggests issues with the driver installed.

4.     Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

If you still face the same issue then you may check for the updated USB device drivers using windows update. Refer to the below link for assistance–

If the issue sill persists I would request you to check for chipset driver updates which you can get at the manufacturer website. The chipset drivers normally incorporate USB controller drivers as well.

Hello DJBigBang,

There is an old Windows XP KB article that was recently updated with multiple steps to resolve these types of issues. The KB covers Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 with step by step methods. See if this helps.

    In my case I had several USB devices no longer recognised at all - not visible in disk management, coming up as "Unknown device" but in this view of Device Manager, I uninstalled the Generic USB device under disks and after that the USB stsicks were recognised. Had to go thru the "installing device" for each one but then AOK. Thanks!

    Did you try turning off (IF ITS A LAPTOP) rmoving the battery and holding the power button down for a bit and then restarting. I tried everything also and this was what fixed it for me. Good luck...

    I did it all.  And still nothing works.  I uninstalled the Universal Serial Bus Controllers and restarted my machine.  Did not work.  I went to the HP web site and downloaded and installed chipset driver up dates.  Did not work.  I cannot get my machine to recognize my Garmin Nuvi 1450 as a storage device.  It works well on my old machine that runs XP but not on the newer machine running Windows 7.   I contacted the people at Garmin and they were very courteous and tried to help me but they relented and said what I had expected that it is a windows problem.  Microsoft needs to fix this.  By all of the other posts concerning the inability of machines to recognize some  USB devices I am not alone.
