When I try to "Find Printer (in MSWord, e.g.) I get the message: The Active Directory Domain Services is currently unavailable.

I'm running Vista Ultimate (SP2) on a home network; and I'm the Administrator.

How do I make the ADDS available?

Wow long thread. Well I skimmed through page 1 and page 12 and could not find the answer. Found this one using the net which helped my W10PRO. I believe mine started due to a failed windows update. Just like everyone I could see my printers listed in control panel, but windows program stated not finding any when attempting to print from an application.  This worked for me:

    1. Press Windows Key and R key together in order to open the run command.
    2. Type in services.msc.
    3. Select Print Spooler.
    4. Right-click this>Properties.
    5. Startup Type should be Automatic.
    6. Service Status should be Running.
    7. If it's already running, stop and the restart.

    Good luck.

Wow, I can't believe this issue has been going on so long. I read the first few pages and the last few pages, not all 12.

However, I had an idea. And it appeared to have worked. Now, my problem is that excel seems to make all my printers disappear, even though they are all fine in control panel. A restart of my computer fixes this, but it's annoying.

If you click on the start menu, and then begin typing "Services" you will get a 'desktop app' simply called "services". Open that, and go to the P section. (It can't hurt to make sure print Spooler is running). The one that fixed it for me is a service called "Printer Extensions and Notifications" you have to right-click on it and click 'start'.

Then close out of excel and open it back up.

I cannot guarantee this will be a permanent fix, excel could crash it again. Also, the startup type is manual, maybe setting it to automatic will change things. I haven't done this yet. I'll wait and see if it crashes again, and go from there.
