clicking Find Printer shows error "The Active Directory Domain Services is currently unavailable" i am on a home network

When I try to "Find Printer (in MSWord, e.g.) I get the message: The Active Directory Domain Services is currently unavailable.

I'm running Vista Ultimate (SP2) on a home network; and I'm the Administrator.

How do I make the ADDS available?

Hello Dick Bard,

Thanks for posting in the Microsoft Answers forum! To add to Lorie – One’s suggestion, please try following the steps below:

>Go to Control Panel

> Select Printers

> Right-click on Add Printer

> Select Run as Administrator

Now try to add your network printer.

    I do not have the option of choosing "Run as Adminstrator"

    Nothing to do, just create a new user account and delete old one.

    Hi guys,

    Unsure if anyone's found a fix for this yet. But after searching and searching and trying all sorts,

    I found below to fix the issue.

    • Start.  - Type, services.msc, in the search box and just press enter.  - Scroll to Print Spooler.
    • Right-click this and select Properties.  - Startup Type, should equal, Automatic.  - Service Status should equal, Started (if not, simply select the Start button).  - If it already says, Started, then try pressing, Stop, and then, Start.

    My Startup Type said Manual and Service Status was Stopped. I did the above and problem solved :)

    In parallel with you I found the same solution. The spooler service had stopped, and I manually re-started it. The problem was fixed.

    However after a re-boot, it re-appeared. At initial boot up, the printer was displayed in Control Panel>Devices & Printers. And in Services, it showed the spooler service was running.

    But after opening Word, it showed 'no printers available', and upon reinspection, Services showed the spooler service stopped, and Control Panel> Devices & Printers showed the printer (and 3 other print devices) as "Unspecified". Word also displayed the Active Directory Domain error noted below.

    It appears that something in Word (and presumably other Office products as well) it disabling the Printer service.

    Does anyone know why Word would turn off the Print spooler?

    Hey everyone, I just had the same problem, but it turned out to be the file I was trying to print. I had a WORD doc emailed to me, opened it with WORD, tried to print, but nothing happened and it gave me the same error. I tried ALL solutions across several different forums and nothing worked. God Bless my wife, she suggested copying the text to another blank WORD page and it worked! (This was based on problems she's had with strange formats not working on her laptop.
