This page is of very little help. I just want the update, not a bunch of garbage.

I got the same error message on opening a multi-page tif online, but only if the file gets too large. It opens in photo viewer just fine, but there is some kind of memory issue. When I click to page 2, 3, etc., I get the error. I closed down a couple of windows and tried it again and it worked. I then opened even more windows and programs, tried to view a smaller file, and didn't even get the first page without the error. Still, I don't know how to check to see if there is an upgrade to photo viewer available (as the message claims). I can't see how to check the version, and I haven't found a current version download. Microsoft is making this too cumbersome in my opinion.

Why would you want to open photos in a powerpoint viewer? I found that this was only a problem when trying to open photos on my daughter's camera - copy the same photos to the desktop and it worked fine.

Crikey! I'm going to explode with this one... I have tousands of pics and they've all worked fine until I downloaded a recent batch from my camera - around 1100 - and some do not open in photo viewer (or any other programme) even though the file is showing as .jpeg of 2.7MB (or thereabouts). Many are absolutely fine. I cannot work this out... There's a whole batch of them that seem to 'exist' but just don't open, yet others before AND after are okay. How can this be?

Hi Arielnancy,

As the sentence suggests, the picture file format may not be supported or you do not have the latest updates to photo viewer.

Windows Photo Viewer can only view .jpg and .jpeg, .tif and .tiff, .png, .gif, .bmp and .dib, .wdp file types.

You may follow the steps below:

1. Right click on any one of the picture and select Open With and click Change Default program.

2. Now select the Windows Photo Viewer in the list.

3. Now put a check mar for “Always use a selected program to open this kind of file”.

You may also try opening the same picture using Paint and check if you are able to open without any issues.

Check if you don't have file extensions displayed by default, right-click on an offending image and look at the file's name.

If you have not set it as default program to open images, do this :

Change which programs Windows uses by default

A default program is the program that Windows uses when you open a particular type of file, such as a music file, an image, or a webpage. For example, if you have more than one web browser installed on your computer, you can choose one of them to be the default browser.

Open Default Programs by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Default Programs.

In Default Programs, you can:

· Set your default programs. Use this option to choose which programs you want Windows to use by default. If you want to use your Windows Live Photo Gallery or Photo Gallery to open all photos, use this option.
