Hope you figured your problem out already. :) This one sounds like you loaded a brand new operating system on a new hard drive. All of your variables and GUIDs will be different on the new install. You just need to take ownership over the objects (files, folder, etc,) and dont forget to disable inheriting permissions on your folders where needed.

Same experience. I remain baffled by the Microsoft indifference and wonder if they read any of this.

Hi Arielnancy, You have been given the standard Microsoft response. I have the same problem and it is because Windiws 7 and Windows 8 do not work properly. I took my new laptop to IT specialist. They wiped disk, installed Windows 8 and downloaded all the updates. I got the same error message when I tried to open some photos I had just taken with my Android phone. I can open the photos on XP and every other system except for Windows 8. Microsoft won't help - there are hundreds of posts about this problem but they just don't care about customers. I gave up and bought an Apple Mac. This works really well and I don't spend all my days trying to fix problems like I had to do with the Windows system. Are you using an XP computer or are you up to date with a windows 7 or 8 computer? When I had this issue I was still on my xp before it died. I'm running a windows 7 computer now and have had few issues. If for some reason photoviewer does not work. You should try IrfanView. I will not link it here but google it. It's a simple program, loads easy and works really well. I use it to quickly paste screen shots and crop as well as for all GIF images because they wouldn't work in my photoviewer. You don't have to pick it up if you don't want to, just saying it works if your photoviewer wont. (even if it does work it's a handy tool to have.) Thank you, MagicalTragedy . Irfanview solved my problem. I had problems sometimes with many file types, not always but sometimes. Irfanview is now set as my default. Thank you so much for the info. I use Windows 7.

Hi Arielnancy,

As the sentence suggests, the picture file format may not be supported or you do not have the latest updates to photo viewer.

Windows Photo Viewer can only view .jpg and .jpeg, .tif and .tiff, .png, .gif, .bmp and .dib, .wdp file types.

You may follow the steps below:

1. Right click on any one of the picture and select Open With and click Change Default program.

2. Now select the Windows Photo Viewer in the list.

3. Now put a check mar for “Always use a selected program to open this kind of file”.

You may also try opening the same picture using Paint and check if you are able to open without any issues.

Check if you don't have file extensions displayed by default, right-click on an offending image and look at the file's name.

If you have not set it as default program to open images, do this :

Change which programs Windows uses by default

A default program is the program that Windows uses when you open a particular type of file, such as a music file, an image, or a webpage. For example, if you have more than one web browser installed on your computer, you can choose one of them to be the default browser.

Open Default Programs by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Default Programs.

In Default Programs, you can:

· Set your default programs. Use this option to choose which programs you want Windows to use by default. If you want to use your Windows Live Photo Gallery or Photo Gallery to open all photos, use this option.

When I had this issue I was still on my xp before it died. I'm running a windows 7 computer now and have had few issues.

If for some reason photoviewer does not work. You should try IrfanView. I will not link it here but google it. It's a simple program, loads easy and works really well. I use it to quickly paste screen shots and crop as well as for all GIF images because they wouldn't work in my photoviewer. You don't have to pick it up if you don't want to, just saying it works if your photoviewer wont. (even if it does work it's a handy tool to have.)
