Windows Update Error 0x80070424

Hello kim,

I´ve done what you´ve suggested, and now i get the error 0x80070424........Can You help me?....Please....

Hey Dalton,

I moved your reply to a new thread since it's a new error code.

The error code 0x80070424 you described also means "ERROR_SERVICE_DOES_NOT_EXIST".  Windows Update depends on these two following services:

  1. Windows Update
  2. Background Intelligent Transfer (BIT)

If it happens that these services are disable or missing, you will encounter this error code.  Hence, you will need to ensure that the necessary services are available and running.  Here's how:

1.       Click Start, type services.msc in the Start Search text area, and then click services.msc in the programs list. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

2.       Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

3.       If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Startand then click OK.

4.       Double-click Windows Update.

5.       If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Startand then click OK.

6.       Double-click Workstation.

7.       If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Start and then click OK.

8.       Close the Services window and try to install updates again.

If the Background Intelligent Transfer Service does not appear in the list of Services, click the following link to view the KB article on the Microsoft web site and download the update: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939159/en-us.

    Thanks Marc.  This worked perfectly. 

    It's unfortunate that the folks at Microsoft can't make things this simple.  They should have peers try their instructions out before publishing them to the public.

    Help that actually "Helps" people would probably change some public opinion of the OS.

    nothen helps i've tryed every thing to start updates sitll won't start

    Marc, thank you so very very much. i have tried figuring this out for weeks. i have done all of the fixes from the forums, Microsoft, Dell, XP solution center, plus done all the diagnostics and auto fix applications. nothing has worked even though i have had all of the specific info about the error and my pc. UNTIL NOW! i have windows xp home edition sp3 32-bit system and this fix worked instantly and it was so freakin simple.  just incase, im gonna copy and paste your above reply for others.

    and here are the directions from that link: i found that Error number: 0×80070424 in Windows Update is caused by some of the dll registration problem.

    To solve the Error number: 0×80070424 in Windows Update follow the steps below:-

    • Click on Start -> Run
    • and paste the command below and enter

    %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\WUAUENG.DLL

    • You are done! Launch your windows update again, you should be able to perform update now.

    A little window pops up and tells you it was successful.

    Immediately when I went  back to the update page after this, it  said that updates were turned on and then checked to make sure my pc is up to date now.  Such a little problem caused big grief- thanx marc!!!!!!
