Hey Dalton,

I moved your reply to a new thread since it's a new error code.

The error code 0x80070424 you described also means "ERROR_SERVICE_DOES_NOT_EXIST". Windows Update depends on these two following services:

Windows Update
Background Intelligent Transfer (BIT)

If it happens that these services are disable or missing, you will encounter this error code. Hence, you will need to ensure that the necessary services are available and running. Here's how:

1. Click Start, type services.msc in the Start Search text area, and then click services.msc in the programs list. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

2. Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

3. If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Startand then click OK.

4. Double-click Windows Update.

5. If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Startand then click OK.

6. Double-click Workstation.

7. If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Start and then click OK.

8. Close the Services window and try to install updates again.

If the Background Intelligent Transfer Service does not appear in the list of Services, click the following link to view the KB article on the Microsoft web site and download the update: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939159/en-us.

Thanks, Flavius... followed your instructions and (after a couple of screwups on my part ;) ) it worked (hallelujah!!!). Three days of constantly trying everything I could find on it (I kept getting error 0x80070005 :( ). Haven't been able to update anything on Vista Home Premium SP1 since August (Windows, iTunes, any-freaking thing...) and now I'm good to go. It's loading 13 Windows updates as I type along with iTunes 9. I just got my boy a new iPod Touch for Christmas & he wasn't happy at all (understatement of the year ;) ).

Anyone having these errors should follow the steps Flavius took the time to post, I'd buy him a drink anytime, anyplace ;) !!!

What is simple and what is difficult depends of point of view. I'll try to give you the best simple instruction (I hope):

1.Download packed TrustedInstaller.exe appriopriate for your system architecture 32bit or 64bit and place on your desktop.

for 32bit system http://www.vistax64.com/attachments/tutorials/16945d1257340284-windows-update-error-80070424-trustedinstallerx86.zip

for 64bit system http://www.vistax64.com/attachments/tutorials/16946d1257340284-windows-update-error-80070424-trustedinstallerx64.zip

2.Download packed TrustedInstaller.reg from here http://www.vistax64.com/attachments/tutorials/16947d1257340458-windows-update-error-80070424-trustedinstallerfix.zip

and place on your desktop.

3.Unpack both files.

4.Takeownership C:\Windows\Servicing folder and add your account to have full control

5.Copy TrustedInstaller.exe from your desktop and paste to C:\Windows\Servicing folder

6.Double click on TrustedInstaller.reg on your desktop->if it will return message "succesfully imported keys to registry", ignore points 7,8,9 and go at once to point 10,if it will return error "access denied" go to point 7

7.Download PsTools http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896649.aspx and extract from this pack psexec.exe file and paste to C:\Windows\System32

8.Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges (right click on cmd.exe as admin)

and type in console

psexec -s -i -d regedit

(this command run regedit from "NT Authority\System" account)

9.In regedit,go to File>>Import navigate to your desktop,choose TrustedInstaller.reg and apply.

10.Restart computer.After restart Windows Update should work fine now.

11.If everything work fine now you should restore oryginal permissions to C:\Windows\Servicing folder

-remove your account from permissions to Servicing folder

-Restore ownership of Servicing folder back to "NT Service\TrustedInstaller"

12.Remove downloaded files from your desktop (TrustedInstaller.reg,TrustedInstaller.exe,packed files) they won't be longer needed

I am running vista but this was very little help to me. I'm not sure if I completed every step correctly. I'm not sure if the post is filled with programming lingo or if the English is poor but it is very difficult to understand.

I would love to understand how I have owned this computer for about a year and have updated windows dozens of times and now all of a sudden I need to start running obscure programs through a command prompt and changing permissions on system folders just to update windows.

A simpler (or more clearly explained) solution would be greatly appreciated.
