logmein123 scam: received a call saying my antivirus was corrupted

I got a call from someone who knew my last name, knew I had vista and called my unlisted number. He (in a thick indian accent) said he would connect me with someone from Microsoft. He had me go to start, right click on computer and go into the viewer and see all the errors. He said my anti virus and other software was corrupted. Then he thought I would under the run command enter www.logmein123.com and then he would connect me with a microsoft tech. I told him no and asked him for his number and name.

His was Austin Stone employee badge 10003 phone number *****Edited***** and he said the techs name was David Alex. what is this? is my computer infected or corrupted?

If you let them into your computer, that means that they could have done anything to it that they want. They could have installed software to let them capture your passwords, they could have stolen any information on it, or they could have left viruses or other unwanted guests behind when they left. Personally, if I were you I would notify your bank of this episode, then back up any files you need to keep, then wipe the computer completely clean and reinstall Windows from scratch, then reinstall your programs and restore the backed-up files.

support.me & logmein123.com is a very valid tool, the scam has nothing to do with the tools they use. Report malicious support people to logmein (that are using their tools):

Do not let a cold caller into your computer. If you have a trusted support person, & you can see, touch, and trust them; you may find, they use that good tool (at $1300/seat/yr-unlimited connections)..

Before you have let the scammers into your computer,write down the code they give you to connect, then hang up and report it, immediately (use the phone number in the above link(hit support option(2)). That will help stop those scammers from using that tech tool.

Do not do anything, they tell you to do, give them any answer you want, plead ignorance- drive THEM through their script--get the code number and hangup...If you can get the code number, and report them they will be out $1300...

There are other remote tools scammers use, from other vendors. This suggestion only applies to the aforementioned 'logmein' tools. Other Mfg tools, that are respected vendors, may have abuse hotlines, also; but you may want to just hang up, if the caller is using them AND/OR get information on how to report them, from a trusted source, so you are prepared, the next time they call.

Since you did what they told you and let them into your computer, you

are now vulnerable to all sorts of problems. I highly recommend doing

both of the following *immediately*:

Change *all* your passwords
Reinstall Windows cleanly.

Back up documents and files you need to keep, wipe the hard drive clean - that is, format it to remove everything on the computer - then reinstall Windows first, then all your programs, and finally restore your backed-up documents.

Have just got a call firstly a woman and then a man, by the name Sam - both with thick Indian accent warning me strongly that my computer was under serious threats of being hacked-in.

Throughout the call, Sam's been trying to assert his authority by claiming that because I wasn't a computer Technician I didn't know and couldn't discern the warning signs on my computer. That's why I was going along with his instructions on what commands to carry out on my computer.

I was asked to open up the Event Viewer and gone through the Application "Warnings" and Security "Audit Failures" and counting how many of these, and when did they occurred, and in between asked to tell what type of computer I got and when did I purchased, who used it, etc and whether it was used for online shopping/banking (and then Sam applied more dramatic effect "Oh, My God" when I responded yes to online shopping/banking). Eventually, I was asked to log on www.support.me.

Once I was on that website which come up with this address: LogMeIn123.com, I refused to carry on by keying in a so-called Private code as I've been throughout the call demanding how they got my home tel. number and purpose of their call and who they were working for.

At that point, I was given a Liverpool phone number: 0151 8080313 which Sam said was the Technical Support of Windows and asked me to call up and he would help me resolve problems.

Once I got off the phone, I instantly search on Google with this address LogMeIn123.com and found your message.

Before I got started writing this message, Sam called me twice. Once, he asked if I called the Liverpool phone number and I responded by rebuking him that I found out this was a Scam and asked him to stop calling me. Almost immediately after I cut him off, he called straight up again and asked how I came up with the idea. I said I found it on the Internet and asked him again to stop calling me or I'd call the police, which seems working as no third call in the last 5 mins.

Grateful that people put their experience on the Web so no more people being conned again.
