logmein123 scam: received a call saying my antivirus was corrupted

I got a call from someone who knew my last name, knew I had vista and called my unlisted number. He (in a thick indian accent) said he would connect me with someone from Microsoft. He had me go to start, right click on computer and go into the viewer and see all the errors. He said my anti virus and other software was corrupted. Then he thought I would under the run command enter www.logmein123.com and then he would connect me with a microsoft tech. I told him no and asked him for his number and name.

His was Austin Stone employee badge 10003 phone number *****Edited***** and he said the techs name was David Alex. what is this? is my computer infected or corrupted?

If you let them into your computer, that means that they could have done anything to it that they want. They could have installed software to let them capture your passwords, they could have stolen any information on it, or they could have left viruses or other unwanted guests behind when they left. Personally, if I were you I would notify your bank of this episode, then back up any files you need to keep, then wipe the computer completely clean and reinstall Windows from scratch, then reinstall your programs and restore the backed-up files.

support.me & logmein123.com is a very valid tool, the scam has nothing to do with the tools they use. Report malicious support people to logmein (that are using their tools):

Do not let a cold caller into your computer. If you have a trusted support person, & you can see, touch, and trust them; you may find, they use that good tool (at $1300/seat/yr-unlimited connections)..

Before you have let the scammers into your computer,write down the code they give you to connect, then hang up and report it, immediately (use the phone number in the above link(hit support option(2)). That will help stop those scammers from using that tech tool.

Do not do anything, they tell you to do, give them any answer you want, plead ignorance- drive THEM through their script--get the code number and hangup...If you can get the code number, and report them they will be out $1300...

There are other remote tools scammers use, from other vendors. This suggestion only applies to the aforementioned 'logmein' tools. Other Mfg tools, that are respected vendors, may have abuse hotlines, also; but you may want to just hang up, if the caller is using them AND/OR get information on how to report them, from a trusted source, so you are prepared, the next time they call.

Since you did what they told you and let them into your computer, you

are now vulnerable to all sorts of problems. I highly recommend doing

both of the following *immediately*:

Change *all* your passwords
Reinstall Windows cleanly.

Back up documents and files you need to keep, wipe the hard drive clean - that is, format it to remove everything on the computer - then reinstall Windows first, then all your programs, and finally restore your backed-up documents.

Canberra Australia here - had a call tonight from an Asian Guy (Steven) saying he was from Windows XP Support and that my computer had logged a serious error from a site in Malaysia and telling me that they could fix for me. Went through a series of Run commands to ID hundreds of errors (Oh my God! says Steven no wonder your computer is slow - and he may be right there - read later though about another solution to that). Steven said he will connect me to a technician to check my computer and assist. He asked me to log into www.logmein123.com to get to the point where the technician would take over and advise how to fix my computer. Screen for technician Ivan Davis came up and I provided details of name and email address (whooops have I stuffed up here!!). Steven also transferred me to his floor supervisor (Christina) an Asian lady. We went through the rigmarole and eventually after several on-screen checks had been done I was advised that my computer software security (10 times stronger and more effective than antivirus programs) and which came with my computer when I bought it, had expired. The technician would open a page for one of several companies that would fix it for me. Up came a screen and lo and behold there were several optional plans ranging from $60 for 6 months to $420 for 5 years coverage; whichever I took would fix all of the computers we had connected to our router because they would all have the errors. At this point I fired up another computer and searched on "who is www.logmein123.com" and lo and behold Google came up with a whole list of sites reporting this as a scam. We have just purchased a $30 package (Advanced System Optimizer) which fixed a whole heap of errors on my wife's laptop and fixed her speed problem straight away. We have asked to update to a 5 computer licence for a further $30 so we can install it on our other machines. I told Chritina that I had found that her approach was a scam and that we had a program to fix things for $30 - in the end she rather meekly went away! I was amazed at the amount of time thy were prepared to spend, it must have been over an hour, to try to get a return of something, probably, after some arm twisting, they would hope for $420.
