You can save custom desktop icon position and restore it when needed, using the Layout.dll shell extension from Microsoft. REF:Save and Restore Desktop icon layout in Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista/7. Or try DesktopOK Freeware - save and restore desktop icons.

    It worrying that users have to search for external software to get the desktop the way they want it (especially icon positions).

    It used to work fine on my pc, but ever since win10 scr3wed things up for unknown reason i find only 100's of posts of desperate users looking for a fix. But all i see is mods explaining the basics (that refuse to work), links to external tools (which dont work for me) and NO solutions (except a full clean install)...

    For me thats an alarming situation.

    Hi Mironov,

    Here are the steps that you need to follow in order to save the desktop icons position.

    To save the desktop icon position and to restore it

    a.    Right click on Desktop and click on View

    b.    Uncheck “auto-arrange icons”

    c.    Uncheck “Align icons to grid”

    Log off and log on to windows. You’ll see the position of the desktop icons unaltered.

    To restore it back, just reverse the process by checking those items.

    Doesn't work for me. I am running Win 7x64. The layout option in the context menu doesn't show up. 

    The download utility is in german and no english option to convert the app''s menu and layout. #fail
