You can save custom desktop icon position and restore it when needed, using the Layout.dll shell extension from Microsoft. REF:Save and Restore Desktop icon layout in Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista/7. Or try DesktopOK Freeware - save and restore desktop icons.

    I am not affiliated in any way with DesktopOk but have been using it for about 2 years now. They have 32 bit and 64 bit versions. You can save different settings for different sets of screens and screen resolutions you want to run with it at various times. (Its also free) :)

    Just my opinion but the functionality it delivers should have been part of the features to enhance the standard windows package. With standard windows we (the dumb users) get used to MS Software Engineers giving us some features with one release and taking some of them away the next. Its just more lost time for us when we have to continually reconfigure desktop icons. That collectively would cost users around the world thousands of hours each day.

    So why don't you build this functionality in to standard windows ...

    I'm guessing many people would also like to save icon positions after a resolution, driver, or hardware change. This solution will not work with those changes.

    I had the problem on a Vista system and yes it does have ESET.  Running MALWAREBYTES also triggered the rearrangement.

    Are these instructions applicable to Vista Home Premium?  This is a 64 bit system.

    Are 'shell32.dll' and 'windows.storage.dll' different versions of the same library?
