I HAVE A VISTA HOME PREMIUM COMPUTER. I UPGRADED THE JAVA TO 6U13. AFTER THE UPGRADE THE JAVA WOULDN'T WORK. I CALLED HP AND IT WAS DECIDED TO RESTORE THE COMP TO THE ORIGIONAL STATE WHEN BOUGHT AND WAS TOLD TO REDOWNLOAD JAVA, BUT FIRST I DID ALL THE WINDOWS UPDATES FIRST. THEN DOWNLOADED THE JAVA AND STILL DIDN'T WORK. UNINSTALLED AND DOWNLOADED AN EARLIER VERSION STILL DIDN'T WORK. THROUGH TRIAL AND ERROR I DISCOVERED THAT THE JAVA ICON WAS NOT IN THE INTERNET OPTIONS ON THE ADVANCED TAB. CALLED HP BACK AGAIN AND THEY WENT THROUGH THE SECURITY WITH ME AND TOLD ME TO REDOWNLOAD IT AGAIN AND THAT SHOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. I WENT TO JAVA .COM FOR THE DOWNLOAD. CHECKED THE VIRTUAL MACHINE AND THE MAN DANCED SAID IT WAS WORKING PROPERLY. i FOUND THE 6U13 IN THE CONTROL PANEL AND IN THE ADD REMOVE PROGRAMS. I WAS TOLD TO GO TO THE START AND TYPE IN JAVA. THE RESULTS WAS NO ITEMS FOUND. THEN WAS TOLD THAT IT DOWNLOADED TO THE COMP BUT DIDN'T KNOW WHERE. IT MUST HAVE NOT DOWNLOADED TO C DRIVE. ALSO WHEN THE COMP WAS RECOVERED EVEN THOUGH I HAD THR DISC TO THE PRINTER IT SAID IT WASN'T COMPATABLE HAD TO GO AND DOWNLOAD THE DRIVER OFF THE INTERNET TO GET IT TO WORK. ALSO ONCE THE JAVA WAS LOADED IT SAID IT WASN'T COMPATABLE THATS WHY I WENT TO AN EARLIER VERSION. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP WITH THIS PROBLEM. I WOULD LIKE TO ADD THAT THE INTERNET PROVIDER IS AOL. THANK YOU

I am having the same problem. I tested it on the first link and I see nothing but a blank box with a red check in the top left corner. I have done all it says to do on the links that followed including the one above. IE8, Windows Vista here. Every site I try java on more recently mathcats.com, http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/kids/games.php, the java site, and the list goes on and on. Please help.

java has icon is in int options, but nothing in advanced
in security, tab-scripting is checked
deleted and reinstalled jave many times
java test site does not allow add ons...symbol with circle and line thru it on task bar
in java control panel in the advanced default for int browsers, it is grey and can not check

First disregard my "Proposed as Answer" above, I clicked the wrong button.
I was having the exact same problem as the original poster. I upgraded to MSIE 8.0 and use Windows Vista. I downloaded JAVA 6u16. On the JAVA website the test applet did not work. On MSIE I went to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced and there was NO JAVA option. As several people pointed out on here most of the solutions being given required the JAVA option to be present in the Advanced tab. I tried several different things and nothing worked. After finding and reading this threat I following the advised of Zinfan post of May 16th, 2009 at 4:04 PM. I un-installed ALL versions of JAVA that were present on my computer. I then downloaded 6u16 again. At first it still wasnt working. However I was also in the process of getting Vista updated (Service Pack 2, etc) and was updating and re-booting all night long. At some point after one of the update/re-boot cycles I happend to notice that the JAVA option WAS present in the Advanced tab of MSIE and was selected. I had downloaded JAVA to use a chat program on a web site and when I went to the web site the chat applet was now working.
Don't know if this will work for everyone but hope it helps a little.
