Beginning yesterday, my Dell laptop randomly started to turn off (not sleep/hibernate but shut down) whenever I tried to close the lid. I have already checked my power settings and they are unchanged. I tried to do a system restore to a time before the problem started and also tried uninstalling the device driver (per a similar question in this forum). Nothing has helped so far. The computer seems to be working normally otherwise.

I also had the same problem with my Dell laptop with windows 8.1 running. Did all possible things to fix the bug, but nothing work for me. Finally I found out that the drivers installed for my DVI to USB adapter is causing the problem. When I uninstalled the drivers, my computer started behave normally. Try this one, if you have recently installed some drivers like this..

I would like to clarify the following things:
When you close the lid on your mobile PC, Windows can shut down, do nothing, or enter a power-saving state, such as sleep or hibernation. You can apply the same setting to all of your power plans or you can apply different settings to individual plans.
I would suggest you to apply the same setting (**do nothing or sleep)** to all plans:
1. Open Power Options by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Power Options.
2. On the Select a power plan page, click Choose what closing the lid does.
3. On the Define power buttons and turn on password protection page, next to when I close the lid, choose what you want your mobile PC to do, both for when it is running on battery and when it is plugged in.
4. Click Save changes.

You'll need a USB key or memory stick or whatever the kids are calling them these days. Then just google "Asus update BIOS" and you'll see a whole bunch of helpful links. You should be able to handle it from there, but if not...
Grab a USB key.
Flip your laptop over and jot down the model number and serial number, just in case. You'll definitely need the model number, I can't remember for sure about the serial number.
Go to the ASUS.com website. Click "Support", then "Consumer". This takes you to http://www.asus.com/us/support/.
Enter the model number of your laptop. Mine is Q550LF or something like that.
It'll give you a list of options, choose "Drivers and Tools".
Choose "BIOS".
You'll see a list of ZIP files containing various BIOS updates. hover over them and your browser should show the name of the file in the lower left corner. I say this because I chose the top BIOS on the list and it was for an N550 instead of a Q550, wouldn't install, and I had to start over. (Q550 is the second one down.)
Download the right BIOS, extract the files to your USB key. IF YOU DON'T, when you get into EasyFlash, it won't be able to find the files and you'll pretty much have to restart the computer, extract the files properly, and then shut the computer down again. Save yourself ten minutes of hassle and do it now.
Now go here: http://www.asus.com/SG/support/FAQ/1008859 and read it carefully. You won't have it in front of you when you follow the next steps.
Follow the directions for restarting your computer and entering the BIOS. With mine I had to hit SHIFT+"Shut down", then press and hold F2 while hitting the power button.
You'll enter EasyFlash or BIOS mode or whatever it's called, and it will look just like what's on the screen on the support FAQ above. Mouse won't work, so use the arrow keys to explore. You'll go to the right spot in the menu -- and if you forget, just poking around will get you to the right place easily enough -- and click on "Update BIOS". It's surprisingly straightforward once you're in.
Note: As I warned you above, if you haven't unzipped the files on your USB, EasyFlash will try to tell you there's nothing there. It can't unzip the files for you, so you'll have to exit out, start the computer back up, unzip the files, then shut down and start all over again.
Explore the correct drive, F:/ or whatever your USB key is called, find the BIOS file that you unzipped, hit enter, it does the rest. Takes a couple of minutes but then you're done, you restart the computer, and it should hopefully have resolved the problem. My BIOS was a few years out of date, so upgrading took care of several issues I'd been having.
Hope this helps. I'm not Microsoft customer support, so I won't be useless and then recite a script at you if it doesn't. :)

This might be a start on the problem. Your solution didn't work, BUT when the computer rebooted, I double checked the settings and "fast startup" was checked again, even though I had just unchecked it two minutes ago.
I have the same problem on my asus zenbook, just updated to win10 and now it turns off when i close my lid...
the power seting is set to do nothing (i have lost tons of work because of this) please fix!!!
