Running Windows 7 Ultimate and I recently tried installing the new softwarer/driver for the Netgear WPN111 wireless adapter. Before the install everything worked normally with the older version 2.1, but after installing version 3.0 it does not. When the network icon in systray comes up you get the disconnected icon with the circle while it searches. Once it finishes it goes back to the disconnected icon, even though it is now connected to my wireless. Here are somethings I've tried: clearing all network locations clearing tray notification cache using CCleaner uninstalling the adapter itself from device manager including checking delete driver removing the wireless network and adding it back manually hiding and unhiding the network icon in the tray uninstalling version 3.0 and reinstalling version 2.1 uninstalling version 3.0 and reinstalling version 3.0 restarting the Network Location Awareness service disabling and renabling the Network Location Awareness service after a reboot Here are some things I've noticed: the network icon used to change to the wireless icon during connecting and once connected, now it always shows the wired network icon tried connecting to a wired connect and the same thing happens, it goes back to displaying the icon with the red "X" even though it is connected booted into safe mode with networking and the icon works normally in safe mode Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. It's one of those things that doesn't really affect the functionality of Windows, but it's annoying as all.

Hmm... a complete reinstall seems a bit premature at this point. Why not first try the following: Clear all preferred wireless networks from your network configuration. Right click to manage, click wireless on the left, delete everything. Ensure the network manager service is running. A reboot may be required, but it was not in my case.

I have had this problem and so has my wife's computer, both running Win7 Professional. We noticed this just started happening after some receint updates, was never an issue before. The connection icon shows a red X even though we have full local and internet access on all machines. Our Win 8 Network Bridge Server does not have an issue, nor do laptops and other devices. It is strictly a post Win7 Update issue which tells me there is a very m inor display bug in the most current update platform somwhere. I think Microsoft should look into it because it bothers millions of customers who at fiest think somethiung is wrong and find out there isn't anything wrong. Think of it as an "idiot light on the dashboard of your car that goes off. It isn't supposed to go off unless something is wrong. But in this case, all systems work and there is clearly nothing wrong so the idiot light warning system is broken. Don't think that can't be a problem. The crash of a passenger laden DC-10 in the Florida Everglades was eventually attributed to Pilot and Co-Pilot error because they were distracted by a faulty idiot light worth 47 cents. In this case, people like myself will be distracted from hours and hours of productive work trying to fix something that turns out to be an idiot written idiot display property in a Win 7 update.

Hi....I had same issues. I had a YELLOW star on my wireless icon in notification area when connected, and a RED cross when disconnected and trying to reconnect. Somehow, I believe I solved my RED cross issue cos I was able to reconnect after the RED cross and I do not have the YELLOW star connected icon either. This is what I did: Opened Network and Sharing Center in Control Panel Clicked on "Change Adapter Settings" I deleted "Incoming Connections" and disabled all other connections including LAN and any other Adapters (like VMWare and TeamViewer) Having only Wireless Network Connection enabled, I right-clicked it and clicked Diagnose. After troubleshooting (Diagnosis), the link came back and much faster...weird though. Good luck guys. I hope my tip helps. Cheers !

Here's how I got rid of the faulty notification. Go to Network & Sharing. Open " change adapter settings " (top left) Right click " Local Area Connection " (your network adapter)... Click " Properties " UNcheck " Internet Protocol Version 6 "... wait for adapter to reconfigure itself. An exclamation symbol replaced the X on my icon... connections were lost. Go back to same spot & reCHECK " Internet Protocol Version 6 " under adapter properties. Adapter reconfigured itself, connections were reestablished... red X GONE! Your results may vary... but I can now be annoyed by something else!

Hi....I had same issues.
