I've struggled with same problem for a whole day and found a workaround. There is a special file called "wmpfolders.wmdb" which stored information about all folders looked through by WMP. You can find this file in you local app folder: c:\Users[your name]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player. What you can do with this file is mark a folder so WMP will ignore it and will not update any files stored in this folder. To do so edit this file with any text editor (it just a plain XML) and replace Exclude="0" with Exclude="-1" to mark folder as excluded.

You can exclude specific subfolders or any top level folder.

Hope it helps someone.

Hello All,

Thank you for using Microsoft Answers forums.  You may have corrupted files.  Use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe).  To do this, follow these steps:

1.       Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click****Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

2.       Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Thanks for using the Answers Forum. Please let us know how this works out.

I was having this problem, but for it appears related to the setting "Maintain my star ratings as global ratings in files", found under the Library tab of the preferences. Turning it off seems to have stopped the problem. This is not ideal, but perhaps I'll just turn this back on every few weeks, write my ratings back to the files, and then turn it off again.

I posted a more detailed account here:

Hello, necromancer66

Thank you for using the Answers Forum and for helping test Windows 7!

Try disabling the “Retrieve additional information from the internet” option. Open Windows Media Player, right click on the navigation arrows at the top, select Tools, Options, go to the Library tab and uncheck the “Retrieve additional information from the internet” option.

I solved it this way:

1. Organize -> Manage Libraries -> Music / Videos / Pictures / Recorded TV

Here I removed everything so that Media Player monitores NO folders

EXCEPT my own Music folder where my mp3 collection is located.

2. Organize -> Options -> Library

Here I have everything DISABLED. Only "Maintain my star ratings as global ratings in files"

is ENABLED which is the best choice because if you make backups of your mp3s you

also don't lose your star ratings because they are stored directly in the mp3 files.

**3. Right-Click on the bar where the Prev/Next Arrows are -> Tools -> Advanced -> Restore media library...**Now the library is rebuild and when I close and open Media Player

again my mp3 collection is instantly shown without a full rescan.

    The reason it doesn't 'turn off' is because it's not [just] updating from the internet. It's also importing as much file information as possible. The more things you have the longer it takes and even leaving it running and then not seeing the message doesn't mean it's finished. For comparison, I have about 4 computers currently in my home, all but my HTPC running Windows 7.

    My main computer displays that message and did for a long time the first time I got my library imported but after that the time got way shorter. It starts again when I add more directories to my library and it didn't just do what I added, it scanned over everything (I'm guessing it checks for any changes constantly). That MAY be why people think it's doing it constantly. If your first time took an hour or more, once it's 'done', any time AFTER it really has done will probably only be 10 or so mins if that much.

    I've never had a problem of high CPU or ram usage, but I have a Q6600 and 8GB of ram so maybe it doesn't impact me much? I just added a directory to my library so it would kick in again and I'm currently seeing 5% CPU use. Also, playing video and music is fine on this end with the updating going.

    My other PC is an older machine, Athlon64 3500 with 2GB of ram and I only have 1 music directory on that with about 4gb of music. It does update when I startup WMP but it only does it for 10 or so minutes if that much and also has no effect on performance.

    I also have W7 on my laptop and it's the same deal. I don't store much media on there because I stream everything from my main PC or my HTPC but I have maybe a gb or 2 of music/movies/pics on there and it does update whenever I open WMP but it only does it for 10-15 mins and doesn't hurt the laptops performance. Generally I'll start up WMP and immediately watch a video in bed and there's no problem.

    You may also want to uncheck volume leveling if that is ticked. I can see that slowing down your PC, though I have that selected and as I mentioned am fine.

    In summary, I don't think it's a problem.

    There's something else going on with your PC I'm thinking. Maybe you need a little upgrade or something else is dragging down WMP.

    Codec packages can do that.
