Cannot rip CD, cannot change album info

Since upgrading to Windows 7 this month, my Windows Media Player experience is considerably worse than it was under Vista.

I cannot rip CDs now - I get the error: "Windows Media Player cannot rip one or more tracks from the CD".

I cannot set a rip location - under the Rip Music tab in Option, the location is blank and when I click on the Change button, nothing happens. No error, no dialog, no message, nothing.

I cannot change album info - I choose the "Find album info" option, choose the album/track, click OK and nothing happens. No changes, nothing.

Please someone help...!

Thanks

G

Hi Lycra.George,

Welcome to Microsoft Answers community.

Perform sfc scan in your computer.

System File Checker(sfc) scan will make Windows replace corrupt or missing system files on your computer.

Steps to perform sfc scan:

1.      Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator.

2.      Click Continue or supply Administrator credentials if prompted.

3.      In the Command Prompt window type the following, and press Enter:

sfc /scannow

4.      You should see the following on-screen messages:

Beginning the system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.

Verification % complete.

5.      Once the scan has completed you will receive an onscreen message resembling one of the following:

…  found no integrity violations

…  found corruption but repaired it

…  found corruption that it could not repair

Clear the Windows Media Player database and check if the problem persists.

To do this, follow these steps:

1.      Exit Windows Media Player.

2.      Click Start, click Run, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Media Player, and then click OK.

3.      Select all the files in the folder, and then click Delete on the File menu.

Note You do not have to delete the folders that are in this folder.

4.      Restart Windows Media Player.

If this does not resolve the problem, clear the Windows Media Player database cache files. To do this, follow these steps:

1.      Exit Windows Media Player.

2.      If you are running Windows Vista, click Start, click Run, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft, and then click OK.

3.      Select the Media Player folder, and then click Delete on the File menu.

4.      Restart Windows Media Player.

For more information visit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925718 (This article is for windows media player 11 but also works for windows media player 12)

If the above method didn’t work then, you can try reinstalling it by following the steps below.

1.     Click on Start button and select Control Panel

2.     Click on Programs and then select Programs and Features

3.     Click Turn Windows features on or off on the left, go into the Media Features section and uncheck Windows Media Player, press OK to uninstall Windows Media Player.

4.     You may need to reboot. Afterwards go back and re-check Windows Media Player to install it once more.

Hope this information is helpful.

Let me know if this worked.

Thanks and Regards:

Umesh P - Microsoft Support

    If any body is still having the same problem as described in the OP (no place to change rip directory in MPlayer->options) and you have tryed all the above from Umesh P (microsoft support) and Andy (asumentalnerd) read ahead.

    After tearing my hair out for several hours trying to resolve this it seams that (this is very much related to Andys post) if MPlayer updates and you have moved drives around whether they are harddrives , network drives or usb sticks for instance that you have had linked to your rip path and/or linked to a library, the old setting will be kept in the registry.

    1. Open up regedit. Start->in the search box type REGEDIT.
    2. Navigate to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences.old\HME\LastSharedFolders] were you will see a list of previously mapped folders e.g(Preferences.old)

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences.old\HME\LastSharedFolders]

    "Folders"=dword:00000010

    "ProcessedCount"=dword:00000000

    "Folders0"="F:\My Documents\My Pictures"

    "Folders1"="G:\Music"

    "Folders2"="G:\Video"

    "Folders3"="G:\Documentaries"

    "Folders4"="G:\Films"

    "Folders5"="G:\Learning"

    "Folders6"="G:\TV Films"

    "Folders7"="G:\TV Series"

    "Folders8"="E:\My Documents\My Music\mp3s\albums"

    "Folders9"="E:\My Documents\My Music\mp3s\old_skool"

    "Folders10"="G:\tmp"

    "Folders11"="\\NETWORKSPACE\openshare\d\albums\Florence and the Machine"

    "Folders12"="J:\Music"

    "Folders13"="E:\My Documents\My Pictures"

    "Folders14"="C:\Users\Public\Recorded TV"

    "Folders15"="G:\Music\albums"

    (mmm yer i was moving alot of drives around :/)

    1. Remap all these locations. May need to reconfigure some drive letters, ControlPanel->AdministrativeTools->ComputerManagement->Storage->DiskManagment,  Depending on what youve been doing.
    2. As soon as you remap the path that was last used by the rip path setting in MPlayer the option to change it will reappear.

    Change it to something current that your gonna use, put all your Disk back to thier proper places in DiskManagment and your good to go.

    Hope this helps some of you still bugged by this problem.

    Bruce..
