Cannot rip CD, cannot change album info

Since upgrading to Windows 7 this month, my Windows Media Player experience is considerably worse than it was under Vista.

I cannot rip CDs now - I get the error: "Windows Media Player cannot rip one or more tracks from the CD".

I cannot set a rip location - under the Rip Music tab in Option, the location is blank and when I click on the Change button, nothing happens. No error, no dialog, no message, nothing.

I cannot change album info - I choose the "Find album info" option, choose the album/track, click OK and nothing happens. No changes, nothing.

Please someone help...!

Welcome to Microsoft Answers community.

Perform sfc scan in your computer.

System File Checker(sfc) scan will make Windows replace corrupt or missing system files on your computer.

Steps to perform sfc scan:

1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator.

2. Click Continue or supply Administrator credentials if prompted.

3. In the Command Prompt window type the following, and press Enter:

sfc /scannow

4. You should see the following on-screen messages:

Beginning the system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.

Verification % complete.

5. Once the scan has completed you will receive an onscreen message resembling one of the following:

… found no integrity violations

… found corruption but repaired it

… found corruption that it could not repair

Clear the Windows Media Player database and check if the problem persists.

To do this, follow these steps:

1. Exit Windows Media Player.

2. Click Start, click Run, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Media Player, and then click OK.

3. Select all the files in the folder, and then click Delete on the File menu.

Note You do not have to delete the folders that are in this folder.

4. Restart Windows Media Player.

If this does not resolve the problem, clear the Windows Media Player database cache files. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Exit Windows Media Player.

2. If you are running Windows Vista, click Start, click Run, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft, and then click OK.

3. Select the Media Player folder, and then click Delete on the File menu.

4. Restart Windows Media Player.

If the above method didn’t work then, you can try reinstalling it by following the steps below.

1. Click on Start button and select Control Panel

2. Click on Programs and then select Programs and Features

3. Click Turn Windows features on or off on the left, go into the Media Features section and uncheck Windows Media Player, press OK to uninstall Windows Media Player.

4. You may need to reboot. Afterwards go back and re-check Windows Media Player to install it once more.

Nope; Thanks for another attack vector, but that doesn't fix it either.

I still cannot set a location for the Rip folder (or change any other Ripping settings) in WMP12's options, nor does it open a Music Library Locations dialog when I use Organize -> Manage Libraries -> Music, nor does it let me turn on Media Streaming in Advanced sharing settings under the Home or Work section (nor by using Stream -> Turn on media streaming... in WMP), and the symptom that originally alerted me to a problem - not being able to create or save a playlist in WMP12 - is still there, too.

Darr247: the issue described in your last paragraph is likely the root cause for all the other issues. I suggest that you first remove the Music library that you created manually. Then use Windows Explorer to navigate to C:\Users<your username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries.

If you still see a file called Music there, delete it as well. Then copy the Music file from the Libraries folder of a fresh user profile to your own Libraries folder. Does that help?

Not me... I've tried everything (except creating a new profile) in this thread and still when I click Organize -> Manage Libraries -> Music, nothing happens.

For all the other Libraries (Video, Pictures and Recorded TV) it opens an xxxxx Library Locations dialog where I can add/remove folders... but clicking Organize -> Manage Libraries -> Music does nothing but return me to WMP 12.

So I can't choose locations for my Music library, I can't create playlists and I can't set the Rip location in Options. Also, another anomaly I noticed is under Stream it won't let me turn on streaming (streaming USED to be turned on).

Neither the (allegedly) 64-bit version in Program Files nor the one started by the default shortcut in Program Files (x86), whether started as an admin-level user or by right-click + Run as administrator will change the Rip setting or allow me to alter the Music library's location[s].

One more thing... when I tried deleting the 4 types from Libraries in Explorer's navigation tree, then right-clicked it and chose Restore default libraries, it only restored Documents, Video and Pictures... the Music library was NOT recreated using that command (though I can manually create one named Music).

After trying everything, I found that this resolved my issue except that I had to add go to "Organize-->Manage Libraries-->Music--> click add and added My Music folder to the library then clicked ok. I was soon able to start ripping without getting an error msg.
