Hi Nikki 801,

Can you please attempt these steps?  Please be very cautious when editing the registry.  If you would please not delete anything just yet.  If you would please perform the following steps....If Upper and Lower Filters is not within this Registry Key, please simply exit the registry.

To resolve this problem, remove the affected filter drivers. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start

Collapse this imageExpand this image

, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.

Collapse this imageExpand this image

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue. 2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM. 3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete. 4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry. 5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete. 6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry. 7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

If you would please follow up with me at your earliest convenience, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,

Aaron Griffin

It sounds like you know what you are talking about.  I need help with a similar problem.  Perhaps you can help me.  I have no problems in my device manager, I was installing solidworks 2008 and it worked fine.  All of a sudden, my disc drive, the same as above, will not recognize a disc.  I right click on it, click explore, and it shows an empty drive.  I open the drive, and the disk is spinning slowly.  I've system restored back before installing the solidworks program, and it still doesn't work.  I've uninstalled, and reinstalled, nothing.  I've opened it in safe mode, same thing.  I did what you said above, nothing new.  I don't know what's going on.  It seems to me that my hardware might be busted.  If you have any other ideas to fix this, I would really appreciate it.  I just reinstalled the hard drive.  I'm going to system restore to that day.  Here are the details:

    Windows XP 32 bit

    Intel core  2 duo

One more thing.  For a few discs before it just stopped trying to read (Spinning fast), it would make strange noises, and spin fast, make noises, then spin fast again.  Then after a few discs of doing that, it just doesn't spin fast.

    Thanks in advance.

Mr. Griffin, my computer DVD hadn't worked since day one (about 18 months ago).  I finally decided to do some investigation on-line to determine what was wrong and if it could be fixed.  That's when I came upon your instructions.  I was very nervous about going "deep" into my computer system.  I took your advice and was very cautious while following your directions - now my computer DVD works!  Thank you - you are a God send.

    Aaron,

Thanks for the "regedit". I used this a long time ago but had forgotten what to do.

The more into it the more it came back.

I have three PCs on Vista - hopefully this will resolve the same problem on the other two.

    Again  _Thanks
