Original title: internet checkers

When playing checkers with Windows 7 an error message 0x80041006 in relation to connecting to the server comes up regularly. The screen for checkers seems to flash on and off at times. Internet checkers when I had XP also appeared to be unstable sometimes with messages regarding corrupt data.

I love how Microsoft gives you BS solutions. When it happens it happens on multiple PCs that i own. The reason it occurs is the MS server goes down Nothing anyone does solves it. Not removing Yahoo or toolbars or anything. All you can do is wait it out. The problem is at Microsoft's end and It will be fixed when the server comes back up. They need to change it to say "The game server is down, try again later" instead of the inane error code stuff.

One time at the time it occurred I contacted  15 different people all over the country and they all got the error message at the same time.

I wonder why Microsoft have not corrected there answer to the above, While it is obvious a network issue on your home computer could cause the issue the fact that the issue occurs regularly and normally disappears after an hour or so but this time frame can be longer on weekends. The fact that when it happens if I try any of my four computers they all have the same issue even those connecting via the mobile network and the fact that all the computers on different networks all start working at the same time without and updates and the fact that no other functionality has suffered and all other websites can be reached does suggest the unthinkable that the issue is at the Microsoft end.

A better answers my be to give an ip address and port to ping to see if the server is running, as I am happy to be proved wrong.

It usually clears after a few hours, I reckon it's an MSN or internet problem, not us.  It regularly occurs on Internet Spades and Backgammon too so it's probably not you.  I usually just leave and return later.

    Same with SP1...........no fix 

    fun to try anyway, something to do now that checkers has been taken from us. Yes I do mean TAKEN FROM US.

    Kevin, thanks that's easy to follow and do.

    Sadly I then went and played a game which crashed at the end before we finished; same as before.

    Couple of points.

    In my file the games  are bckgzm, chkrzm and shvlzm .   There is no .exe on any of the three. The dates are as you have them 14/7/2009

    But in compatibility choices I have Vista, Windows 8, and the SP1, SP2          but not XP.

    I selected SP2 and that didn't fix the issue.

    I will now do the same with SP1 and see what happens.

    First open the folder the games are in... Usually, they should be found here..

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Multiplayer

    Then open the folder for the game you want to fix (or repeat for each game).

    I will just do BackGammon...

    So then open the folder for BackGammon..

    Copy the .EXE (as shown by red arrow above) to your DESKTOP.

    Do this by right clicking on the file and select COPY. Then go to your DESKTOP and PASTE a copy there (by right clicking on the DESKTOP and selecting PASTE).

    This is needed to get around the PERSMISSIONS (Unless you are logged on as ADMIN you cant change the files in the folder).

    Now RENAME the .EXE in the FOLDER to keep as a backup. This is done by RIGHT Click then RENAME. Call it something like below (highlighted).

    Now due to permissions you may get prompted as below.

    If it does select CONTINUE. If you dont have ADMIN permissions, you may get prompted for an ADMIN User ID and Password. You must type that in. If you dont know them, you will need to get these details without it, you cant perform this mod.

    Now on the copy you made on the Desktop..

    ..right click and choose Properties..and select the Compatibility Tab.

    Within that Click "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select Windows XP (Service Pack 3) from the drop down list. If that option is not present I have been informed the VISTA options also work, but haven't checked them myself.

    .. Then Select OK.

    You must now move this file from the DESKTOP back to the games folder, so that both files are present. When doing this you may get a Permission error again, but select CONTINUE, again if you are not an Admin account it will prompt you to enter Admin User ID and Password. When the .EXE has been copied the folder will look like below..

    You can now close that folder and run the game as normal..

    Above is shown for BackGammon, but the same process can be followed for Checkers and Spades.
