XBOX 360 wireless receiver won't connect to controller with Windows 7 64bit

Hello, im having a problem with a xbox 360 wireless receiver on my windows 7 64bit, i installed the software that came with the receiver and it installed fine but when i went to connect the controller with the receiver it doesnt work, i've tried it dozens of times and i have rang microsoft for help but they werent too sure. Its a official controller which came with an xbox360 and the receiver isnt microsoft but i was told from the microsoft people that some receivers are made outside of microsoft but are still fine. I'm wondering if there is a specific windows 7 receiver driver for it?

hey thanks i got it to work! so relieved. heres how you do it:

Right click on Computer

Go to Properties

Click on Device Manager

Right click on the Unidentified Device

Go to Properties

Go to the Drive tab

Click on Update Driver…

Browse my computer for driver software

Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer

Microsoft Common Controller for Window Class

Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows Version: 2.1.0.1349 [8/13/2009]

Update Driver Warning

Click Yes

i cant believe it was that simple, you dont need to download any seperate driver or anything, just follow the steps.

    very late i know but instead of the Xbox 360 wireless receiver for windows ver xxxxx.

    try the last option which on mine was Xbox 360 wireless receiver for windows and has no version number next to it . During this my controller was still searching and soon as i clicked this it connected straight away ... only problem is i wish i found this out 6 years ago ?

    I am still unable to get mine syncing. I bought this piece( http://dx.com/p/xbox-360-wireless-game-controller-black-2xaa-refurbished-102340 ) which already came with a receiver. Installed the drivers from MS page, did the trick with the  "Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows Version: 2.1.0.1349 [8/13/2009". Everything looks like this under the "Devices and printers" - ( http://i.imgur.com/dg8XeXe.png?1 ). When I plug the receiver in USB, the green light glows, I press the sync button on both, the receiver and controller, the receiver blinks for a while, then stops blinking, the controller tries to sync, but after few seconds it fails and the all 4 lights on the controller keep blinking together. I have tried all of the usb ports on my laptop - USB 2.0 and 3.0, deleted NFCACHE.1, uninstalled and re-installed everything, but still no luck. 

    Is there any solution besides taking the receiver apart like in this thread ( http://www.sevenforums.com/gaming/239135-xbox-360-wireless-receiver-not-working-solution.html )?

    P.S. I am running win 7 x64

    Worked a dream, I simply chose the most recent driver, within seconds an Icon was on screen, saying the drivers were updating and by the time it had finished the controller was already connected.
