What does the error message "Catalyst Control Centre:  Host application has stopped working"  mean and how do I fix it??

This may be the solution you are seeking.

I recently removed the Vista Recovery Center malware from another one of our company laptops. It has ATI graphics installed. This malware hides most of the files on the PC in an attempt to fool you into thinking that your PC is really damaged like it is reporting. Removing the malware does not undo the hidden aspects. In Vista, the c:\Users*"your profile name (usually Owner)"*  folder contains the AppData subdirectory that the Catalyst Control Center needs to access in order to function. When this directory is hidden, then CCC cannot locate the necessary files to launch. To fix this issue, I use the following steps.

Navigate to c:\ and right click on Users. Select properties. Under the General tab, look at the bottom for the Hidden selection. If there is not a check mark in the box, place a check mark there. Hit apply, select yes to apply to all subdirectories. If you clicked ok, you may notice that it disappeared from the right pane once it finishes. It should still be listed under the tree on the left. Right click on it again. This time remove the check mark and apply to all subdirectories. Once it has finished, your files in the Users directory should reappear and Catalyst Control Center should function normally again. This has worked in all cases that I have encounterd so far. Hopefully this works for you as well..

    this happened to me and i have Vista - the "users" dissappeared from the tree! i did a "find files", types Users and the computer can find it but won't show you anything. i right clicked on 'users' and tried copy address. and somehow that made it show back under the tree (still empty) so that i could then go in and unclick "hidden". i'm not a tech person but i do ok w troubleshooting so you might want someone else's opinion. but my files are back!

    just want to say 'thank you' and ask a follow up question. This happened to me and right away my files were gone. The "system restore" that takes over tells you your computer is shot and directs you to a site where presumably you would put in your bank card info [i didn't]. It took me a few tries to get Microsoft Forefront to run and it found 4 malware files and removed them. My compute also has Defender and i ran that, it found nothing. But my files were gone so i found the information above and managed to follow your instruction. I also ran a full scan again.

    i noticed that some of the folders or files on the desktop now open to the last folder on which i clicked. if i go in through the start up menu i don't have that problem. I created shortcuts for all my folders and that seemed to help. But is this a remnant of the problem?

    my other question is - do I need to do anything else? Is it safe to check my more sensitive accounts for example?

    This solution did not fully resolve the issue for me because it hid other folders on my pc in addition to the "Users" folder.  Is there a method for determining all of the folders/files that the "malware" hid and unhidding those files?  Right now it's "run-to-fail" as software fails and then I find the files/folders hidden and unhide them one at a time (gggggrrrrrrrrrrr.....).  The "malware" even hid folders and the files in them that I created myself, not just "typical" or "set" folders/files.
