How can I lock desktop icons?

I am unable to LOCK the icon items on my desktop. I have clicked right on the desktop and via properties checked lock items, yet they are easily moved and NOT locked. I've tried locking them thru 'Appearances and Themes', yet they will NOT lock. How can I get them to stop moving around and stay put by locking. Any help would be graciously appreciated. And, no I am not changing my resolution which I know moves them.

2011-06-29T11:42:09+00:00 If you mean the icons move after a reboot or shutdown then try using F5 after arranging or adding icons, or right-click the desktop and click 'Refresh'. That should lock the current icons in place.
Caveat: If you changea document with MS office it'll delete the old icon and generate a new one. I use OpenOffice which seems to leave the icons intact.

2011-06-20T13:54:40+00:00 Will this work for multiple users logging to a domain? I know in xp I was able to copy a user profile over to the default user and it kept the screen icon layout for all new users logging on. .

2011-06-08T08:29:15+00:00 That's right. Right now mine seems to be working with Show Desktop items & Lock Desktop Items checked. But, I know it won't last forever!

2011-06-07T23:48:09+00:00 There is another option on a Win 7 machine.. just do not check ANY thing for the desktop sorting the icons... Another option is a program by Stardock called Fences. It works, is free and is actually a little fun. I have used it, my family uses it and others that I know use it too.
No of the solutions presented here work the way that most of us want them to. Mainly because the others cannot understand what is happening since they don't pay attention to their desktops.
