My audio stops working after Windows 7 has been running for a while;

Ideas:

  • the audio will work again after a re-boot but again, it will stop working after Windows has been running for a while. Re-bootig always fixes the problem but only for a few hours and then the audio is gone. audio problem

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft answers forum.

You can check for the sound drivers, whether they are installed correctly.

if not uninstall them and install again.

I suggest you to verify that the default sound device is set correctly

  1. Click Start, type Sound in the Start Search box.
  2. Click Sound in the search results at the top of the Start menu.
  3. Click the Playback tab. Notice the check mark next to the default device. For most users, the default device is Speakers.

Make sure that your audio settings are configured as expected. Follow these steps:

  1. On the Playback tab, select the playback device, click Properties, click the Advanced tab, and make sure that the Default Format is set to the value that you expect.

When you finish, close this window to return to the previous window.

  1. On the Playback tab, select the playback device, click Configure, and then make sure the configurations are set correctly.
  2. If the sound settings are set correctly, you are using speakers as the sound device, and your speakers are already set as the default device, go to method 5 now.
  3. Select the sound device that you want as the default sound device, and then click Set Default.
  4. Click OK to save your settings and to close the Sound dialog box.

Determine whether you can now hear sound. If you can hear sound, the issue is resolved. If you cannot hear sound, try method 5.

you can also check performing clean boot.

To perform a clean boot on a computer that is running Windows Vista, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

  1. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
  2. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
  3. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
  4. Click OK.

When you are prompted, click Restart.

After the computer starts, start the  program and check whether the problem is resolved.

This worked for me, without having to download a bunch of stuff...

In the “Start Search” box type in services.msc (hit Enter)

In the Services window look for “Windows Audio”, rightclick on it and choose Restart

    With kind regards

    Leo

Thank you. I tried this advice (and the rest of advice of this thread) but it did not work for me. Besides, I might have been able to live with such a workaround if it bugged once a week or so, but not every 15-20 minutes in the midle of my gaming time :-P

Like you said l3kris, it sounds like it's more a hardware conflict/fault than software. You mentioned that you had a USB headset, perhaps you could try a different pair, maybe some that aren't USB and have the standard green and pink jacks on them and connect it directly to your computer's on-board sound. There should be some ports on your PC somewhere for connecting a mic and headphones.

This will certainly be a lot cheaper than buying a new soundcard and will help to eliminate what might be causing the problem. Does the problem occur when you don't use your USB headet and just use some speakers and no mic?

The problem with this type of issue is that you will have to spend some considerable time eliminating possible conflicts (both software and hardware) before finding out exactly what's happening. So if the problem is happening even with normal PC speakers hooked up and no mic then it's safe to say it's not your headset causing the issue. You can go into Device Manager and try disabling all your audio devices under the "Sound, video and game controllers" tree and then enabling them one by one when you play a game and seeing if the audio is effected with all of them or just one thing in particular.

I'm guessing you've tried using a different USB port for your headset and giving them a bit of a clean? USB ports can be finicky so it wouldn't surprise me if it works fine on one port but another.

As I said, try getting a different headset first or just hooking up some speakers to your PC's speaker port and see if that makes any difference. If it does then it may be safe to assume it's your headset, if not then you may be looking at a new sound card. Oh you might also want to consider giving the inside of your PC a bit of dust with a can of compressed air (obvs. when it's turned off). If you haven't cleaned your PC for some time then it can be incredibly dusty in there and this could also be effecting things.

Let us know how you get on.

English is not my mother language which must account for the difficulty I'm having expressing myself clearly enough to be correctly understood :P

I previously used a USB-headset without any problems whatsoever. But they were in need of being replaced, therefore I bought a headset with jacks. At the same time I made the clean install.

When the sound disappears from the jack headset (and from a set of speakers with jacks that I also tried connecting) there is still sound in my USB headset.

I have now ordered an external USB soundcard to use with my jack headset.

Same problem here, on Netbook Acer Aspire One 522 with Conexant audio.

All sounds mute after about 30 min playing (Windows Media Center) but only when I'm using the internal speakers instead of headphones on the headphones plug. Very odd...
