My audio stops working after Windows 7 has been running for a while;

Ideas:

  • the audio will work again after a re-boot but again, it will stop working after Windows has been running for a while. Re-bootig always fixes the problem but only for a few hours and then the audio is gone. audio problem

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft answers forum.

You can check for the sound drivers, whether they are installed correctly.

if not uninstall them and install again.

I suggest you to verify that the default sound device is set correctly

  1. Click Start, type Sound in the Start Search box.
  2. Click Sound in the search results at the top of the Start menu.
  3. Click the Playback tab. Notice the check mark next to the default device. For most users, the default device is Speakers.

Make sure that your audio settings are configured as expected. Follow these steps:

  1. On the Playback tab, select the playback device, click Properties, click the Advanced tab, and make sure that the Default Format is set to the value that you expect.

When you finish, close this window to return to the previous window.

  1. On the Playback tab, select the playback device, click Configure, and then make sure the configurations are set correctly.
  2. If the sound settings are set correctly, you are using speakers as the sound device, and your speakers are already set as the default device, go to method 5 now.
  3. Select the sound device that you want as the default sound device, and then click Set Default.
  4. Click OK to save your settings and to close the Sound dialog box.

Determine whether you can now hear sound. If you can hear sound, the issue is resolved. If you cannot hear sound, try method 5.

you can also check performing clean boot.

To perform a clean boot on a computer that is running Windows Vista, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

  1. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
  2. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
  3. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
  4. Click OK.

When you are prompted, click Restart.

After the computer starts, start the  program and check whether the problem is resolved.

I've been following this thread on and off for a few years now ever since I ran into the issue way back.

Having updated to Windows 10 a few days ago I've gone about a week or more without having audio issues (Cortana sometimes stopped listening to me and responding properly in general but that issue seems to be gone for days now).

Until today, when I booted up and this nightmare came back. I used to be able to restart the audiosrv service back on Windows 8.1 to fix it temporarily, but when I try that now it gets stuck on the "stopping" state.

I've tried getting the latest drivers from the realtek site, disabling exclusive mode for the device and setting it back to 16bit 192000Hz from the 24bit thing it was on before. I'll get back to this thread later to let you guys now if the problem persists.

Just hoping to solve this problem I upgraded to win10 however the problem was still there.

most probably it is a hardware issue due to overheating.

It seems Toshiba used a defective conexant product

I started this thread a couple of years ago and can't believe the nonsense I got in response.

I just updated to Win 10 and haven't seen the problem in about a week. I'll let you know if this is the ultimate solution.

I have this problem for nearly 1 and a half year (yeah my patience is great). I recently message Toshiba (I have a toshiba laptop windows 7) and this is what they sent me. (i have not done it yet because i need to back up everything first).

As this issue may be caused by a software misconfiguration, we would recommend that you reset Windows 7 on your laptop. You can do that by following the steps below.

Please be aware that the recovery process will delete any data, settings, and applications on your laptop. You must have a backup of any data you wish to keep before proceeding. To recover your laptop to the factory defaults, please follow these steps:

    1. Turn the laptop off and ensure the mains adapter is connected. 2. Turn the laptop on while holding down the F12 key. 3. When the boot menu appears, use the arrow keys to select 'HDD recovery' and then press enter. 4. When asked if you wish to access the recovery, select 'Yes' and press enter. 5. When the tool has launched, press next several times until 'Initialising the partition...' is displayed (please note that you will not need to change any settings as the correct ones are selected by default).

The first stage of the recovery process will take around 15 minutes to complete. When it has finished, you will need to click 'Restart now'. The second stage will take around 45 to 60 minutes to complete. When this is complete, the machine will restart and take you through the first time setup routine. After this the computer will install the device drivers; this may take a while and the computer may restart 15 times or more. This is perfectly normal.

If anyone here wants to try this let me know if it worked...
