My audio stops working after Windows 7 has been running for a while;

Ideas:

  • the audio will work again after a re-boot but again, it will stop working after Windows has been running for a while. Re-bootig always fixes the problem but only for a few hours and then the audio is gone. audio problem

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft answers forum.

You can check for the sound drivers, whether they are installed correctly.

if not uninstall them and install again.

I suggest you to verify that the default sound device is set correctly

  1. Click Start, type Sound in the Start Search box.
  2. Click Sound in the search results at the top of the Start menu.
  3. Click the Playback tab. Notice the check mark next to the default device. For most users, the default device is Speakers.

Make sure that your audio settings are configured as expected. Follow these steps:

  1. On the Playback tab, select the playback device, click Properties, click the Advanced tab, and make sure that the Default Format is set to the value that you expect.

When you finish, close this window to return to the previous window.

  1. On the Playback tab, select the playback device, click Configure, and then make sure the configurations are set correctly.
  2. If the sound settings are set correctly, you are using speakers as the sound device, and your speakers are already set as the default device, go to method 5 now.
  3. Select the sound device that you want as the default sound device, and then click Set Default.
  4. Click OK to save your settings and to close the Sound dialog box.

Determine whether you can now hear sound. If you can hear sound, the issue is resolved. If you cannot hear sound, try method 5.

you can also check performing clean boot.

To perform a clean boot on a computer that is running Windows Vista, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

  1. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
  2. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
  3. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
  4. Click OK.

When you are prompted, click Restart.

After the computer starts, start the  program and check whether the problem is resolved.

I have had the same audio issue since I upgraded from Vista 64 bit  to Windows 7 64 bit. Always random and a reboot corrects, I have a Gateway FX00 that's about 2 years old.

im having the same problem , i built this computer so i cant give you a model number......my mobo is a P55 FTW Evga ...it worked fine for months and now just started to do the same as the above posts....so i cant go to the dell website and use that driver for a fix.  So any other fix besides the above posts might help.

Is anyone else encountering a problem where the PC freezes immediately after startup, or startup fails, when restarting to solve this problem? This happens to me roughly once out of every 4 times I have to restart due to this problem. Having to restart using the power button after this frequently causes my sound card to not be detected in device manager (or anything) on the next restart and the computer will return to normal on the third restart.

I have tried all the suggested solutions except for performing a clean boot, as I would have to run in this mode for several hours.

As this is happening across multiple sound cards and drivers I would suggest that this is a problem related to either windows 7 or a program that we have running. The only processes that have been running every time this has happened are default startup stuff like steam, CCC, itype, ipoint and bitdefender.

Has anyone else found a possible solution or indication why this might be happening? I am going to try significantly older drivers for my (Creative X-Fi) card currently.

same issue on totally unrelated hardware:

    mobo asus P5KC

"pro" audio interface: TC electronics Studio Konnekt 48, connected in firewire.

and a totally unrelated toshiba laptop....

Happens in WDM mode only, not when working in in ASIO.

    • "randomly" happens after 3/4hrs playback
    • usually happens when a system update or equivalent is run
    • if sampling frequency is at something else than 44.1kHz audio falls back to it, causing severe dropouts as the unit is still in 88.2 / 96kHz.
    • usually rerunning audio configuration & cycling sample rates restores sounds / stops glitches / restores sample frequencies issues.
